MWM uses Google Cloud and Fastly to power its leading creative app publishing business and deliver fast, engaging content experiences for millions of users in 180 countries.
MWM delivers AI-powered apps that enable anyone with a smartphone to bring their creative ideas to life. The company first launched a single application, edjing, a powerful pro DJ tool that’s easy enough for beginners to use. Today, it’s the world’s most downloaded DJ app. Fast forward just over a decade and MWM is the world’s largest consumer app publisher excluding games. The company greatly diversified its offerings to include apps for music, photo editing, video creation, and others. Since 2020, MWM has made its publishing platform public to top app studios and developers, aiming to create the largest global developer community.
“Our tech team can make anything possible with inspiration,” says Charles Perrot, Chief Operating Officer at MWM. “We’re always looking for the next great app. We also have to manage a massive number of multi-active users across our apps. There are constant updates, downloads, and a huge amount of data. We invest in automation, engineering, and infrastructure to ensure we continually enable exceptional experiences.”
Supporting MWM’s success are Google Cloud and Fastly. MWM has collaborated with both companies for years to power its growing business. More recently they’ve looked to integrate more advanced AI technologies to transform what customers can do.
Since its inception, MWM has worked with Google on several fronts, including Google Ads, Google Workspace, Google Play, and Google Cloud. MWM also worked closely with the Android tech teams to provide exceptional real-time audio experiences on Android, which was a mandatory prerequisite for its DJ application.
Google Cloud has enabled MWM to remain autonomous through self-service solutions, exceptional documentation, and direct access to experts who can answer any questions.
The company built its infrastructure for powerful mobile apps using a tapestry of Google Cloud solutions including Firestore, Firebase Cloud Messaging, and Crashlytics within Firebase. In addition, Google Cloud Storage provides expandable data storage, while BigQuery is the backbone for MWM’s data analytics needs.
The company still runs some legacy code on App Engine, but Cloud Run sits at the foundation of its new technology stack for greater flexibility and more advanced integrations. Spanner continues to be a favorite among engineers, enabling highly scalable database services with virtually no maintenance. The result is that all content generated on MWM’s apps is available and organized.
MWM has seen enormous increases in the volume of app content in the past few years, along with millions of new monthly active users (MAUs). The IT team knew they needed to prioritize scale, performance, and latency. They also had to keep IT costs in check.
The team explored the possibility of moving to other cloud services but redetermined that Google Cloud and Fastly deliver the best mix of capabilities and efficiencies. With Google Cloud and Fastly, MWM could keep costs under control and still scale services, without having to deal with big jumps in IT administration and costs.
MWM uses Fastly’s Content Delivery Network (CDN) to quickly deliver apps and content to people across 180 countries from centralized storage in Belgium. A software development kit (SDK) is embedded in the apps for system abstraction, while MWM developers upload and download content from the company’s storage system without having to think about location or content replication.
This fulfills MWM’s goal to have an internal Developer Experience that allows a single content upload somewhere in the world to be available globally the next second.
MWM appreciates the self-serve nature of Fastly services. “Fastly documentation offers the details we need to quickly set up very complex integrations through a simple dashboard,” explains Delepine. “It’s been invaluable in enabling us to efficiently manage our global storage environment. It takes just minutes to update apps and seconds to push everything live worldwide.”
MWM transacts with Fastly through Google Cloud Marketplace to further streamline deployments and billing. Looking ahead, MWM is exploring other areas where Fastly will benefit its business, including security, edge computing, and network optimization.
MWM is incorporating AI into its apps. The company uses Google Kubernetes Engine to run internally developed models and is exploring advances with Gemini and Vertex AI. MWM is excited to continue adopting more technologies that will further improve customer experiences and drive exceptional content delivery.
With over 50 apps in its portfolio, MWM is a global leader in the development and publishing of creative mobile applications powered by AI. MWM’s expertise spans across various fields such as music, drawing, photography, and video, with their apps among the most sought-after on the app stores.
