Métrica Móvil drives data-driven transformation with Looker

Google Cloud Results
  • 40–60 hours per month saved on report creation, allowing more focus on innovation

  • 50% faster dashboard creation, providing real-time data analytics and more-informed decisions

  • ~5% reduction in infrastructure or licensing costs from consolidating tools

  • Reduction of 3-4 days to a few hours or minutes to answer business questions through analytics embedded directly in its IRIS Fleet platform

Métrica Móvil implemented Looker in its flagship analytics platform, overcoming data fragmentation, accelerating innovation and decision-making, and turning information into actionable intelligence that drives safer, smarter, and more efficient operations.

Frustrated by fragmented tools and manual reporting

Founded in 2011 in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico, Métrica Móvil is a leading Mexican telematics and data intelligence company with a mission to transform fleet management by embedding real-time insights directly into daily workflows.

“The trend is clear: companies want end-to-end solutions that bring together data, intelligence, and real-world context — all in a way that simplifies operations and enables smarter decisions,” says Gerardo Ortiz, Head of Product and Digital Transformation, Métrica Móvil.

The company serves a diverse client base, from local businesses with small fleets to global enterprises managing thousands of vehicles. Métrica Móvil recently launched its flagship intelligence platform, IRIS Fleet, powered by Google Cloud. The solution brings together telematics, AI, and analytics in a unified environment.

Previously, Métrica Móvil’s analytics landscape was a patchwork of disparate tools. Each tool operated in isolation, and teams often had to adapt to the business intelligence systems preferred by their customers. This created a fragmented environment requiring manual reporting, with data teams spending excessive time preparing reports, validating data across multiple tools, and responding to repetitive ad hoc requests. Executives waited days for consolidated KPIs, often making decisions based on incomplete or outdated information, while business users faced limited self-service capabilities and inconsistent experiences depending on the tool used.

Additionally, Métrica Móvil programmed all its front-end elements directly. This process was time-consuming, with a single dashboard taking one to two weeks to develop. The company sought a more efficient way to create dashboards and provide valuable insights to its clients.

Finding a unified analytics experience with Looker

As a Google Cloud customer for more than 10 years, Métrica Móvil saw the potential for a unified, governed analytics experience. “In the past, I personally developed some dashboards in Looker Studio for internal use, especially when I was temporarily leading our field services department. That hands-on experience gave me a strong understanding of the tool and its potential,” recalls Ortiz. Key reasons Ortiz gives for choosing Looker were its native integration with BigQuery, the semantic layer for governance, and the ability to deliver insights directly inside the platforms the company’s clients already use.

The feature that really made the difference for us was Looker’s semantic layer. It allowed us to unify definitions, manage user permissions within our products, and deliver consistent, governed metrics. This has been the real foundation of our embedded analytics strategy.

The Looker implementation was marked by speed and collaboration. Thanks to the strong integration between Looker and BigQuery, Métrica Móvil connected its existing data warehouse almost immediately. The company worked with Google Cloud and Nubosoft. a Google Cloud partner, to ensure best practices and accelerate deployment.

Within weeks, Métrica Móvil presented its first customer-facing dashboards, creating immediate excitement. The company then embedded Looker directly into IRIS Fleet.

“The feature that really made the difference for us was Looker’s semantic layer. It allowed us to unify definitions, manage user permissions within our products, and deliver consistent, governed metrics. This has been the real foundation of our embedded analytics strategy,” Ortiz says.

The organization’s analytics stack is built on Google Cloud, with BigQuery as the central data warehouse, with Pub/Sub, Datastream, and Cloud Run functions moving and transforming data in real time. On the SaaS side, IRIS Fleet integrates with platforms like Geotab and Streamax for telematics and video. The company manages APIs through Apigee, relies on Cloud Storage for large-scale data handling, and uses Vertex AI for machine learning use cases. Ortiz says, “Looker sits at the center of this ecosystem, bringing all these sources together and delivering governed, real-time insights directly to our customers.”

From manual reports to real-time insights

With Looker Embedded, Métrica Móvil built dashboards that are fully integrated into IRIS Fleet, giving customers visibility into their most critical indicators and providing instant feedback. One of the company’s most significant discoveries has been the ability to detect patterns in driver behavior that were previously invisible. “With Looker, we can correlate alerts such as speeding, harsh braking, or idling with time of day, route type, and even external factors like traffic or weather,” explains Ortiz. “This insight has allowed our customers to proactively coach drivers, reduce safety risks, and optimize operational costs.”

In addition to monitoring driver performance, dashboards built with Looker Embedded enable customers to track alerts from telematics and video devices and follow operational KPIs such as fuel consumption, route adherence, and service quality. Customers can now make better decisions in minutes, not days. “Our customers no longer depend on IT or manual reports. They have real-time insights at their fingertips,” says Ortiz. As a result, Métrica Móvil has fewer data-related support requests, freeing up resources for innovation.

With Looker inside IRIS Fleet, Métrica Móvil can also better support its business model of allowing for monetization per connected vehicle or asset. The solution pulls information from telematics devices and displays it in both the front end and the embedded Looker instance. In addition, Métrica Móvil can provide standardized dashboards for quick scaling as well as customized dashboards to meet the specific needs of large global companies.

By integrating Looker into its system, Métrica Móvil significantly accelerated its dashboard development, with development cycle times now at least 50% faster for creating dashboards compared to traditional methods. “With Looker Embedded, what once took us days to deliver can now be built in hours and delivered directly inside our products. This simplicity and speed were previously not feasible, and it has changed how quickly we can respond to customer needs,” says Ortiz.

Looker is also driving efficiencies by transforming how different teams at Métrica Móvil work. The data team is saving 40–60 hours per month on creating reports, focusing instead on innovation and higher-value analysis. Company executives can now access consolidated KPIs in real time, enabling faster, more-informed decisions and reducing the time required to answer business questions from 3–4 days to a few hours or minutes. With self-service dashboards, Métrica Móvil has avoided the need to hire two additional analysts. The company is also reducing infrastructure or licensing costs by about 5% by consolidating tools and enhancing its competitive differentiation in the marketplace.

Métrica Móvil is moving beyond dashboards, leveraging AI tools like Vertex AI and Gemini. Looking ahead, Métrica Móvil plans to implement Model Context Protocol and Looker’s Conversational Analytics API, allowing customers to ask questions in natural language, get real-time answers, and trigger actions directly from the platform. “Our vision is for customers not only to see what happened, but to have a conversation with their data and receive intelligent recommendations inside IRIS Fleet and our other products,” Ortiz says. “We believe the real opportunity is just beginning.”

Métrica Móvil is a leading telematics and fleet management company based in Mexico. The company empowers customers to operate safer, faster, and smarter by embedding real-time insights directly into their daily workflows.
