IMPT uses Google Cloud AI, blockchain, and carbon offsetting to help customers make more sustainable travel and retail choices.

Making carbon offsetting effortless

People often say that everyone wants to change the world, but nobody wants to change their habits. It’s usually framed as a criticism, but IMPT saw this as an opportunity.

The Ireland-based startup was founded on a simple idea: what if consumers could reduce their carbon footprint without changing how they shop, travel, or live their daily lives? By embedding verified carbon offsetting directly into hotel bookings and online purchases, IMPT makes sustainability part of the transaction itself rather than another task on a customer’s to-do list.

Today, IMPT utilizes AI, blockchain, and Google Cloud technologies to make that vision possible at scale. The company serves more than 100,000 app users, 20,000 active shoppers, and millions of hotel listings while helping consumers make more sustainable choices automatically.

As IMPT expanded, so did the complexity of the technology behind the platform. The company needed infrastructure capable of supporting millions of hotel records, thousands of API integrations, and an increasingly AI-driven operating model. It also wanted a cloud provider that aligned with its sustainability mission and could support its ambitions for AI innovation. After evaluating its options, IMPT selected Google Cloud to help scale its platform and support its next phase of growth.

Every booking on IMPT funds one tonne of verified carbon offset without asking customers to do anything extra. Google Cloud gives us the scale to make climate action part of every transaction, not an afterthought.

Building for an AI-first future

For CTO and co-founder Mike English, moving to Google Cloud wasn’t simply a technology update. It was a strategic decision about where IMPT wanted to go next.

The company had built its platform on cloud infrastructure from day one, but as AI rapidly transformed the technology landscape, the team began looking for a foundation that could support both its sustainability goals and its long-term vision for innovation.

As IMPT expanded, so did the complexity of the technology powering its platform. Behind every hotel search, booking, and carbon offset transaction sits a sophisticated ecosystem comprising approximately eight million hotel listings, 25,000 API integrations, blockchain-powered carbon-credit tracking, and AI-powered services that support more than 6,600 licensable partner territories across 195 countries—all priced from a single canonical dataset.

“We knew AI would fundamentally change how modern businesses operate,” says English. “Google Cloud gives us access to the tools, services, and innovation we need to build for that future.”

Today, IMPT’s AI estate running on Google Cloud Compute Engine handles approximately 400 inbound customer conversations every day, delivering a median AI response time of six seconds to help customers and partners receive fast, accurate support.

The team completed its migration to Google Cloud in approximately 15 weeks, moving all workloads to a platform designed to support both current operations and future growth. Even before the migration was complete, IMPT was already deploying new AI capabilities and integrating them into day-to-day workflows.

For example, Google Workspace APIs across Gmail, Calendar, and Drive power IMPT’s AI-run sales operation, enabling AI agents to support partner conversations, automate meeting scheduling, send timezone-aware reminders, and generate pre- and post-meeting documentation.

AI also helps regenerate more than 6,600 partner pages every night in under 60 seconds, ensuring displayed pricing remains aligned with checkout. Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform supports AI-driven classification, summarization, translation, and resilience, allowing the platform to continue serving customers even during periods of peak demand.

“The exciting part was that we didn’t have to wait until everything was migrated to start seeing value,” shares English. “We could begin experimenting with AI agents, learning from the Google Cloud team, and building straight away.”

Today, IMPT runs 100% of its workloads on Google Cloud. Compute Engine still provides the foundation for its AI-first platform, while Identity-Aware Proxy enables secure access to cloud infrastructure without exposing unnecessary public endpoints.

For Mike, one of the biggest benefits of the move isn’t tied to a single feature or capability. It’s the confidence that comes from knowing the business is built on infrastructure designed to scale. “Before, a lot of our attention was spent thinking about systems, infrastructure, and how we would support the next stage of growth,” English explains. “Today, we have confidence in the platform we’re building on.”

We knew AI would fundamentally change how modern businesses operate. Google Cloud gives us access to the tools, services, and innovation we need to build for that future.

English also credits IMPT’s participation in the Google for Startups Cloud Program with helping the company navigate its migration and accelerate the adoption of new technologies. Alongside guidance from the Google Cloud team, the program provided cloud credits that enabled IMPT to invest in innovation while managing infrastructure costs.

“The Google Cloud team was excellent to work with,” says English. “They helped us make the right decisions and gave us access to the resources we needed, and the startup credits make a real difference—for a growing company, having that level of support allows you to invest more in innovation and less in worrying about infrastructure costs.”

Scaling sustainable travel with a lean team

With its migration complete, IMPT is now focused on what comes next: growing its customer base, expanding its platform, and making sustainable travel accessible to more people around the world.

Meanwhile, AI has become a core part of how the company operates. Across development, operations, sales, marketing, and customer experiences, AI-powered workflows automate repetitive tasks and help teams focus on higher-value work.

Automation now manages up to 30 partner meetings every day from scheduling and attendee capture through timezone-aware reminders and follow-up documentation. Attribution is tracked across more than 20 satellite websites using Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager, helping the team better understand which channels generate bookings.

IMPT’s team of 20 people uses these combined capabilities to operate infrastructure at scale and compete in markets dominated by companies with thousands of employees. “Google Cloud gives us access to AI agents and technologies that dramatically expand what a small team can accomplish,” says English. “Instead of spending our time managing infrastructure, we can focus on growing the business, improving customer experiences, and building what’s next.”

Google Cloud Carbon Footprint reporting also helps IMPT monitor infrastructure-related emissions, ensuring the company’s cloud operations support its broader climate goals. “Our mission has always been to make sustainability effortless,” he says. “Now we have the technology foundation to pursue that mission at a much bigger scale.”

Google Cloud gives us peace of mind. We know the platform can support where we’re going next. Instead of worrying about infrastructure, we can focus our energy on growing the business, serving more customers, and continuing to innovate.
