Golden Energy Mines (GEMS) is an Indonesian mining company that has undergone extensive digitalization across its pit-to-port and back-office operations. Initiated in 2020 under the vision of CEO Pak Bonifasius, the DigiTech division aimed to drive inclusivity in digital intelligence. While this effort built a robust ecosystem of approximately 50 application portfolios, the sheer volume of data created a cognitive bottleneck. Traditional dashboards remained fragmented, making it difficult for leadership to navigate complex, cross-functional information. Without a way to reconcile data quickly, executives often faced a 'silo perspective,' where decisions made for one domain could unintentionally sacrifice the efficiency of another.

GEMS identified an opportunity to enhance decision-making by moving toward a more nuanced AI solution that could better interpret the sophisticated and diverse data environments unique to the mining sector.

To reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and accelerate delivery, GEMS onboarded Google Cloud as its primary infrastructure provider. Utilizing Google Compute Engine and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), the DigiTech division built a secure foundation to manage its vast application ecosystem. To protect these digital assets, the organization implemented Google Cloud Armor for infrastructure security and used Cloud Monitoring for complete observability. This selection was further aligned with company-wide standards for Google Workspace, ensuring that the new intelligence system could seamlessly serve its large user base while maintaining a secure-by-design architecture.

Scaling specialized AI agents with Gemini to accelerate executive decision-making by 90%

To address its data challenges, GEMS developed GEMVIS (GEMS Valuable Intelligence System), a hierarchical multi-agent system led by Eky Pratama Halim and Tijani Rijal Fadhilah, Chief Engineers at GEMS. The system uses a Dispatcher Agent with Gemini to interpret user intent and route queries to specialized agents for domain-specific tasks. To ensure data sovereignty, GEMS utilizes a hybrid infrastructure: sensitive mining data is processed on private on-premise GPU servers for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), while an enterprise-ready API allows the system to call out to Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform for high-level reasoning. This architecture improves accuracy and reduces incorrect or generalized responses by fetching data from specialized sources, including Coal Chain Management.

GEMVIS is a value generator that capitalizes on the large amount of data generated by our operations. It provides essential assistance in understanding the data horizon and connecting all processes, giving our employees a true helicopter view of the entire operation chain.

Crucial to this success was the partnership with Datalabs in the early stages, which provided fast knowledge of cutting-edge cloud and AI technologies. By actively delivering training and sharing industry best practices, Datalabs helped GEMS run AIOps independently, navigate the fast pace of technology improvements, and build a robust, hybrid foundation. This technical orchestration serves as the brain of GEMS, turning dormant application data into an active, conversational asset.

Shifting to a data-driven culture and scaling for the future of smarter mining

The impact of GEMVIS has been transformative, accelerating decision-making speed by over 90% and condensing complex insight generation from hours into seconds or minutes. By providing a real-time "helicopter view" of the entire operation chain, GEMS has effectively lowered the barrier to data accessibility for its 4,000+ users. This high accessibility is driven by the system's omnichannel ability, which allows GEMVIS to be embedded directly into all existing internal solutions, ensuring that every employee can access intelligence the moment they open an application.

Beyond speed, the system has sparked a significant mindset shift across the DigiTech team. For data analysts and scientists, the daily workload has moved from producing manual reports to actively exploring data to find the new baselines required to train GEMVIS. This focus on data quality ensures the system remains hyper-local and precise. By leveraging data from all 50 satellite solutions, GEMS has successfully transformed its digital assets from a cost center into a value generator that maximizes the ROI of every previous technology investment.

Looking ahead, GEMS is scaling this architecture to meet the increasing complexity of the mining business. The roadmap includes deploying specialist agents for ESG initiatives, carbon emission tracking, and geotechnical analysis. The organization is also exploring the implementation of the Google Alpha Earth Foundation model to capitalize on spatial and environmental data for greener mining activities. By institutionalizing this intelligence, GEMS is moving beyond simple AI adoption to create a best-fit asset that ensures long-term strategic independence and operational excellence. This initiative is aligned with the long-term vision of Dimas Sutejo ("OmDim") – Chief Digital and Technology Officer of GEMS, which emphasizes proactively shaping and creating the future of mining starting today through strategic planning and collaboration with strong technology partners such as Google Cloud.
