Fetch leverages a single Google Cloud stack to deliver transparent coverage and proactive health insights for healthier pets.
For many Australian pet owners, the true cost of veterinary care is a shock that comes too late. Advanced treatments for accidents or illnesses often exceed $10,000, a financial blow that is unmanageable for the 85% of Australians currently without pet insurance. Even for those with coverage, the industry standard often involves a "pre-existing condition" trap.
Most insurers only review a pet’s medical history after a claim is filed, meaning an owner could pay premiums for years only to have a life-saving treatment denied when they need it most.
Fetch set out to fix this by offering upfront certainty—being clear on what exactly is covered from day one. To do this, the team had to analyze a pet’s entire life story, which often meant sifting through more than 100 pages of unstructured, inconsistent, and sometimes handwritten clinical notes from multiple clinics. A specialized agent would spend up to three hours just to codify a single pet’s history into a usable format.
To deliver on their mission, Fetch couldn't rely on a patchwork of best of breed third-party tools that would hike up costs and limit their flexibility. They needed a foundation they could own completely.
We realized that to truly change the industry and make pet care affordable, we couldn't just stitch together off-the-shelf software. We needed total control over our roadmap to solve complex data problems like analyzing clinical histories upfront. That’s why we chose to build our own stack on Google Cloud from day one.

The Google AI Accelerator helped us redesign our portal so our vet-trained agents can work with maximum efficiency. By surfacing only the most relevant clinical data, we can scale our operations while maintaining the five-star service our customers expect.

To avoid stitching together multiple vendors, Fetch built its entire sales, service, and data ecosystem on a single Google Cloud stack. This architecture allows the team to deploy custom logic that directly serves the customer, rather than managing a complex web of third-party tools.
At the heart of the infrastructure is Gemini in Vertex AI, which acts as the engine for analyzing messy clinical histories. Instead of a human agent reading 100 pages of notes, the AI ingests unstructured data—including handwritten vet records and inconsistent terminology—and organizes it chronologically. It identifies potential pre-existing conditions and presents a clear summary to a vet-trained agent in a custom-built portal. This human-in-the-loop workflow allows agents to validate assessments in minutes rather than hours, ensuring high accuracy without burnout.
For the engineering team, Cloud Run provides a serverless environment that removes the burden of infrastructure management. This freedom allows developers to focus on shipping new features, such as the ability to waive waiting periods using in-app video. By integrating Firebase and Flutter, customers can upload a video of their pet’s ears, eyes, and gait to prove their health instantly, rather than waiting weeks for coverage to kick in. Meanwhile, all data is centralized in BigQuery, giving Fetch a single source of truth to drive future health insights.
Delivering total transparency upfront was once impossible due to the sheer volume of data, but the single-stack approach has made it viable. Fetch now achieves more than 95% accuracy in coding veterinary conditions, a level of precision that allows the company to give owners certainty without the substantial overhead. This means capital isn't wasted on maintaining servers—it is reinvested directly into keeping premiums low and coverage clear.
To better support Australian pet parents, Fetch is now pivoting to become an all-in-one health partner. By analyzing clinical insights collected during the upfront check in BigQuery, Fetch aims to deliver proactive advice that helps pets live longer. For example, by tracking when vaccinations are due, the app could proactively prompt an owner to schedule a clinic visit and even facilitate the booking directly with their vet. This is part of a larger plan to shift the focus from transactional insurance coverage to a long-term health journey.

We are building a health business, not just an insurance company. The data we gather upfront allows us to anticipate health issues years before they become emergencies. Google Cloud gives us the foundation to turn those insights into advice that extends the lives of the pets we protect.
