2024 DORA Award winner Etsy scales to support a marketplace of millions

Google Cloud Results
  • Maintained Elite status across DORA's four key performance metrics

  • Expedited new product launch times

  • Optimized costs and minimized environmental impact

  • Scaled to accommodate over 90 million buyers and seven million sellers

Etsy adopted DORA principles and moved to Google Cloud to support its growing user base. This significantly improved development processes and product launch times, while staying agile for everyday growth and innovation.

The new way to power innovation and agility

To support over 90 million buyers and seven million sellers, Etsy partners with Google Cloud to handle the constant growth and evolution of its marketplace. In just nine months, a core team of eight engineers migrated Etsy’s primary systems to Google Cloud. With Google Cloud's scalable infrastructure, Etsy can easily adapt to changes in demand and run smoothly, even during peak shopping events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Why Google Cloud?

As an ecommerce company, our demand is inherently unpredictable. With Google Cloud, we can auto-scale to handle peak traffic periods and unexpected surges, ensuring that our teams remain focused on critical needs of our buyers and sellers.

Google Cloud offered the scalability and reliability Etsy needed to support rapid innovation. Pay-as-you-go pricing and auto-scaling allow Etsy to handle dynamic traffic demands while keeping costs under control. Google Cloud’s multi-zone deployments and managed services ensure consistent availability for Etsy's millions of users. Etsy also uses BigQuery and Vertex AI to access data and advanced analytics that improve decision-making and enhance user experiences.

Founded in 2005, Etsy is headquartered in Brooklyn, NY with additional offices in Dublin and Mexico City. As of December 31, 2023, its marketplaces connect 9 million active sellers – including 7 million on Etsy.com, 80% of whom are women – and 96 million active buyers in nearly every country in the world.
