Overcoming the limits of legacy infrastructure

Google Cloud stood out as the most advanced platform for the future. It's the leader in container technology such as kubernetes, and its cutting-edge AI and machine learning solutions would help drive our strategy to increase our use of big data and AI.

Julien Languenou

Chief Information Officer, Cogedis

From small artisan shops to large farms, businesses can easily be overwhelmed by the daily demands of administration and finance. That's where Cogedis comes in. As a trusted partner for thousands of businesses across France, the firm handles the complexities of everything from accounting to legal support, freeing managers to focus on growing their businesses.

As the world of business has become more data-driven, the nature of this administrative burden has evolved. Being a leader in its field, Cogedis has made a concerted effort to go beyond traditional services and provide proactive insights using data and artificial intelligence (AI). To achieve this, however, Cogedis first had to address the limitations of its own technology.

Previously, Cogedis's on-premises and third-party hosted infrastructure created significant operational bottlenecks. Its rigid, monolithic setup made it difficult to manage compute resources in a flexible and cost-effective way. A simple task like resizing a disk could take up to two weeks, as the team had to wait for approvals from a third-party provider. This lack of agility directly impacted the business, causing service interruptions and hindering the company's ability to provide timely, data-backed advice to its customers. The alternative was to overprovision resources, but this meant paying for compute that the company didn't need, leading to wasted expenditure.

Cogedis knew it had to embrace the cloud to grow and innovate. As a long-time user of Google Workspace for employee collaboration, the team was already familiar with the Google Cloud ecosystem. They were also attracted by the range of turnkey solutions Google Cloud offered. However, it was the cloud provider's capabilities in data analysis and AI that convinced Cogedis it was the right platform for the company's future growth.

"Google Cloud stood out as the most advanced platform for the future," explains Julien Languenou, Cogedis Chief Information Officer. "It's the leader in container technology such as kubernetes, and its cutting-edge AI and machine learning solutions would help drive our strategy to increase our use of big data and AI."

From bottlenecks to real-time operations

Cogedis began migrating to Google Cloud to improve scalability and performance and enable new levels of efficiency and innovation across the business. An internal project spearheaded the migration, and technical teams were upskilled to adopt agile ways of working and cloud-native techniques.

One of the most significant improvements has been the move to real-time data processing. Previously, the company's data visualization tools operated on a weekly cycle. Using Pub/Sub and Cloud Run, Cogedis has created an asynchronous data-ingestion pipeline that provides a near-real-time view of a customer's business performance.

Our previous API manager could go down three or four times a week. Now, with Apigee, we have a reliable, scalable solution, meaning our customers enjoy smoother data streams without interruptions. Apigee just works.

Sylvain Laurent

Software Development Manager, Cogedis

This has reduced data latency from one week to one day, allowing customers to access live dashboards and make faster, data-informed decisions. For example, when a customer's fuel provider sends a bill, Cogedis can now integrate that data into a customer's dashboard within an hour, giving them near-instant visibility into their expenses.

The move to a more flexible infrastructure has also led to substantial cost savings. With Compute Engine and Cloud SQL, Cogedis can spin up virtual machines or database solutions as needed and shut them down when a job is complete, ensuring the company only pays for the resources it needs. This has allowed the company to avoid over-provisioning and has reduced infrastructure costs by 66.6% compared to its previous on-premises infrastructure.

Cogedis's migration to Google Cloud has improved the reliability of its services too. With Apigee, the company can manage its APIs more efficiently. The team's previous API manager was prone to frequent outages that disrupted critical processes, such as document scanning. Since migrating to Apigee, the company has experienced a significant improvement in API reliability and uptime, ensuring a seamless data flow for its customers.

"Our previous API manager could go down three or four times a week," Sylvain Laurent Cogedis Software Development Manager, explains. "Now, with Apigee, we have a reliable, scalable solution, meaning our customers enjoy smoother data streams without interruptions. Apigee just works."

Navigating future challenges with
data analytics and AI

Google Cloud is the biggest engine for innovation I know. It's enabled us to meet our future business challenges without significantly increasing our operational costs. It's effective for our clients, and it's fun for our technicians. It's everything we need.

Matthieu Viguier

Cloud Architect, Cogedis

True to the company's vision of harnessing data and AI to help customers manage their businesses, Cogedis now uses Google Cloud to create innovative AI-powered solutions. The company has built an AI-driven legal assistant with Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform Discovery Engine and Cloud Run that's trained on decades of the firm's legal expertise. This AI assistant complements the knowledge of Cogedis's human experts, ensuring a consistent and high-quality service for customers. "With this legal assistant, which we have trained on our wealth of legal expertise using Vertex AI, our customers now have a legal expert in their pocket that they can consult for accurate advice at any time," Matthieu Viguier, Cogedis' Cloud Architect explains.

The company is also using Gemini Code Assist to help its developers save time and focus on building new solutions, with a goal of achieving 80% AI-generated code. Cogedis's developers now spend 90% less time developing prototypes, freeing them up to concentrate on more complex, strategic work. "Our developers love playing with Gemini, it's completely changed their mindset," explains Viguier. "Where a prototype might have taken a month to develop, they can now do it with Gemini in just one day. It's a gamechanger."

As Cogedis's migration to Google Cloud continues, Viguier is depending on the platform for the tools and capabilities to navigate a fast-changing industry and drive its customers' success. To that end, Cogedis is currently exploring how to use BigQuery to provide customers with data-driven predictions to help increase their profitability, such as advising farmers on the optimal time to sell crops.

"Google Cloud is the biggest engine for innovation I know," adds Viguier. "It’s enabled us to meet our future business challenges without significantly increasing our operational costs. It's effective for our clients, and it's fun for our technicians. It's everything we need."

Multi-specialist Cogedis provides accounting expertise and advice to business leaders, offering tailored services to help its 20,000 customers increase agility, improve performance, and innovate to meet tomorrow's challenges.
