Cascades partners with oXya to migrate its business-critical SAP environment to Google Cloud for optimal performance, availability, and cost efficiency.

Finding a partner in Google Cloud

Cascades may be a public company with 10,000 employees, but it still manages to feel like a family business. Employee get-togethers outside of work are common, and the company prefers to develop close ties with partners and vendors. Leaders like to talk with their partners, collaborating to learn what's going well and what's not, and how they can operate even better in the future.

When the IT team determined that it was time to switch cloud service providers for the company's extensive SAP environment, finding a personal connection was critical. Cascades relies on its SAP ERP environment to power its entire business and cannot afford downtime. Wanting best-in-class technology, Cascades established a multi-cloud environment, switching cloud providers several times in search of the best performance for every application.

We aim to be cloud smart, meaning we are always looking for the best solution to support our goals. When we compared cloud providers to support our critical SAP environment, Google Cloud came out on top.

Benoit Lemire

IT Director for Infrastructure and Architecture, Cascades

Most recently, Cascades embraced Google Cloud as the foundation for its essential SAP environment. While the company initially looked at Google Cloud for cost-efficiency, the improved performance and flexibility were added bonuses. But, in the end, it was the close collaboration with Cascades and integration partner oXya that truly set Google Cloud apart.

Bringing the team together for a smooth migration

When I think about the migration, the first thing I think of isn't the technology, but how the teams at Google Cloud and oXya came together, brought their knowledge and experience to the table, and led us to success.

Hugo Guoin

Vice President of IT, Cascades

Cascades wanted partners who would work together, approaching challenges from the same side rather than forcing Cascades to act as a mediator. The joint proposal from Google Cloud and oXya demonstrated collaboration that reassured Cascades that they were making the right choice. Moreover, once Google Cloud and oXya discovered the high level of technical skill across Cascades, the partnership turned into a true team effort with all three parties contributing to discussions and sharing knowledge freely. The result was a smooth migration accomplished on a tight timeline.

With the SAP environment running on Google Cloud, Cascades experienced a performance boost, leading to a smoother experience for users. Scalability also improved because the team could add capacity much faster.

Given Cascades' commitment to sustainability, finding green technology is always important. Google Cloud works with the company to find specific ways to measure impact and reduce emissions in the cloud.

One of the biggest benefits of the move to Google Cloud is its excellent availability. The SAP environment is critical to Cascades operations, including manufacturing. When the environment is down for maintenance, production stops. With Google Cloud, Cascades is confident that SAP will always be available when people need it.

Cascades uses an ETL pipeline to transfer data from the SAP database to BigQuery. Many people across the company need to work with SAP data to predict financials, monitor customer demand, or balance manufacturing schedules. BigQuery provides a central data repository for all employees to run their queries.

Cascades only operates with a small SAP S/4HANA footprint currently, but it plans to expand its implementation in the future to provide teams with even more access to data. Google Cloud and oXya will support the company as it continues to grow and enhance customer services.
