Innovation and transformation are key drivers for serving individuals and businesses in new, sustainable ways within the energy sector. Capital Energy, the first 100% renewable, vertically integrated electricity provider on the Iberian Peninsula, has been leading the way for 20 years. With a diversified portfolio of assets generating 20 gigawatts (GW) of energy from wind and solar projects, alongside technologies like hydrogen generation and bulk energy storage, Capital Energy is at the forefront of sustainable energy.

"Our mission is to be a leading platform for businesses at the intersection of sustainability and digitalization. We're committed to serving our customers using a 100% renewable, well-integrated approach to electric utilities," says Victor Gimeno Granda, Venture Capital Managing Director, Chief Sustainability, and Digital Officer at Capital Energy. "To accomplish this, we need secure management solutions that can handle our complex information and operational technology environments."

Capital Energy works with Google Cloud for its infrastructure, analytics, and other capabilities, and partners with Fortinet to operationalize its cybersecurity solution that allows autonomous management of cybersecurity, connectivity, systems, and critical information.

Improving access management with integrated technologies

Capital Energy operates its renewable energy infrastructure using highly complex operational technology (OT). To be successful, they must provide their maintenance and construction contractors with secure, controlled, and efficient access to various digital elements across distributed wind and photovoltaic farms.

"We quickly recognized the need for a highly scalable, secure, and well-integrated network infrastructure offering broad visibility and control," says Israel Devesa Cuevas, Chief Information Officer and Chief Technology Officer. "Google Cloud and Fortinet provide the right combination of secure and resilient interconnection, along with other capabilities critical to our work."

Capital Energy previously struggled with costly, difficult-to-manage OT communications solutions because each supplier had to connect to each plant. This resulted in a multitude of access points and virtual private network (VPN) connections that had to be managed.

We quickly recognized the need for a highly scalable, secure, and well-integrated network infrastructure offering broad visibility and control. Google Cloud and Fortinet provide the right combination of secure and resilient interconnection, along with other capabilities critical to our work.

By moving to Google Cloud with Fortinet Cybersecurity, Capital Energy now has a centralized platform that easily delivers strong access control across all of its systems based on a zero-trust approach. The Fortinet Security Fabric offers the elements to implement an integrated and automated solution that includes endpoint protection, multi-factor authentication (MFA), centralized access management, OT security Monitoring, and Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) for policy enforcement.

Google Cloud and Fortinet Cybersecurity solutions have contributed jointly with Capital Energy to implement a solution that minimizes service interruptions and decreases site commissioning time by an entire month. The company implemented networking best practices with Google Cloud virtual private clouds (VPCs) and Fortinet OT Security Services to comply with the industry's demanding OT requirements for inventory, protection, detection, and response.

Capital Energy deploys its architecture by using Fortinet cloud-native secure networking in best practice, high availability architectures, to deliver secure and optimized communication, routing, and segmentation to isolate and protect its various data lakes and service platforms. No sites are exposed to the internet; instead, all communications occur through a Fortinet Secure SD-WAN mesh accessible solely via a secure gateway hosted in Google Cloud.

Moreover, Capital Energy cybersecurity solutions based on AI-driven and OT-aware Fortinet Security Operations solutions running in Google Cloud automate and centralize security management to further reduce strain, enhance security, and keep Capital Energy ahead of evolving cyber threats.

"Google Cloud and Fortinet simplify the complexities of our environment and strengthen our overall cybersecurity posture. We now operate more securely and efficiently," says Devesa. "The solutions streamline access management for maintenance teams and ensure that application and site security are not sacrificed for ease of use."

Where sustainability and analytics meet

Capital Energy cited Google Cloud's approach to sustainability and its data and AI capabilities as vital when looking for the right cloud provider. Google has the ambitious goal of reaching net-zero emissions across its operations and value chain and operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030, and in order to support customers on their sustainability strategies, Google Cloud offers tools like the CarbonSense suite to help others measure and define action plans to reduce their carbon footprints.

Capital Energy was able to expand the scope of calculation of the company's Scope 3 emissions, related to operations and data storage on the cloud, thanks to the strategic alliance signed with Google. It has had a positive impact on the Capital Energy carbon footprint as emissions associated with cloud operation and storage services have been offset by Google Cloud, in line with its 100%-renewable energy consumption target since 2017.

Sustainability is at the center of our corporate mission, and we feel Google Cloud shares our goals. Google Cloud has had an immediately positive impact on Capital Energy's business processes.

"Sustainability is at the center of our corporate mission, and we feel Google Cloud shares our goals," says Victor Gimeno Granda. "Google Cloud has had an immediately positive impact on Capital Energy's business processes. It is a sustainability-focused cloud that supports cutting-edge solutions for data capture and processing, enabling Capital Energy to reach its digitalization and sustainability goals faster. This approach leverages innovation, allowing the company to adapt to a continuously evolving environment with greater efficiency, transparency, and traceability of processes, while maximizing integration across the entire value chain. It will also make it possible to reduce environmental impact, improve the digital offer, and fulfill the responsibility expected of a company like Capital Energy to future generations by contributing to a more sustainable world."

Capital Energy also sought a cybersecurity partner that shared a similar sustainability approach. Fortinet's commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by its ambitious goals, such as achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 and its inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

Capital Energy is working on data-centric solutions that improve developing business plans, enhance internal training with optimized analytics, and use insights to strengthen sustainability initiatives. The company's critical digital data platform runs on Google Cloud to centralize and democratize information. This accelerates decision-making and maximizes the value of the company's renewable industrial assets.

"BigQuery, Looker, Pub/Sub, Cloud Composer, and Vertex AI are invaluable in helping us to make the most of data from hundreds of thousands of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors in our wind and photovoltaic facilities," says Devesa. "We use these technologies to apply the power of AI to energy management so we can extend the lifespan of our assets, reduce operating costs, and maximize revenue from our industrial assets."

Cultural alignment for a brighter future

Capital Energy continues to upskill and reskill its employees at a fast rate to ensure that they can use the advanced and dynamic technologies offered by providers like Google Cloud and partners like Fortinet. Google Cloud's commitment to digital transformation aligns with training and awareness support to improve communication, uncover new ways of working, and spur innovation, while Fortinet is working to train one million individuals in cybersecurity by 2026.

"Our alliance with Google Cloud and Fortinet exemplifies Capital Energy's vision and the type of partners we want to work with," says Devesa. "The high standards upheld by these companies align with our ambition to make a positive impact on society across all environmental, social, and governance (ESG) areas."
