In a health and fitness market crowded with active training products, Blackroll has always understood the importance of recovery to people's overall wellbeing. Since launching Germany’s first fascia foam roller in 2007, the company has helped millions of people take control of their activation and regeneration to live a pain-free, healthy, and powerful life. Now, as wellness habits shift toward sustainable, lifelong health, Blackroll is evolving from an equipment manufacturer into a complete digital recovery platform for everyday support.
To deliver this experience, the company needed to pair its physical tools with an adaptive digital companion. However, years of operation led to a disconnected digital setup spread across separate cloud networks and isolated software applications. Critical customer information was trapped inside separate business units, making it difficult for the Blackroll team to see how people used the tools. To build an all-in-one intelligent coaching experience that offers clear user insights, Blackroll decided to move its entire infrastructure onto a single platform.

Improving customized recovery with
automated tools using Gemini
To clean up its infrastructure, Blackroll collaborated closely with Google Cloud partner DEPT® Agency, which provided the deep technical expertise needed to build a modern digital recovery platform. Customers use this platform to log their personal fitness goals and connect their wearable health trackers. To make sense of these interactions, the team gathers ecommerce records and mobile app events into BigQuery to build a unified view of customer data and habits. Blackroll then uses Cloud SQL to securely pull daily wearable data like sleep patterns and activity loads into the platform, actively adjusting customized recovery routines for users based on real-time body signals.
With this data foundation in place, Blackroll built an interactive AI coach to offer conversational physical guidance. Using Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and Agent Development Kit (ADK), the team created autonomous coaching agents that interpret user context and reason across wearable metrics. For the user, the experience is like having a continuous conversation with a digital companion who updates exercise sessions dynamically based on injuries or equipment ownership. To guarantee safety and accuracy, the team used Agent Search to construct a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system. This grounds the conversational agents directly in Blackroll’s verified library of scientific research and the knowledge of its 5,000 physiotherapists, drawing on deep company expertise and ensuring accuracy.
This digital ecosystem relies on a swift, headless architecture powered by Cloud Run, Firestore, and Cloud Run functions. To build efficiently, Blackroll uses the Antigravity orchestration platform to automate its software development loops. During a 25 developer-day evaluation of the website redesign, a single engineer used Antigravity to manage 11 parallel workstreams and save more than 140 hours of manual effort.

Scaling recovery expertise globally with
managed services from Google Cloud
Rebuilding its core commerce setup and creating the new companion app took Blackroll just five months using managed services from Google Cloud. By moving away from separate cloud networks and isolated software applications, the company has already reduced its software footprint by 20%. Blackroll expects this platform unification to cut its overall running costs by roughly 25% over the next year, allowing engineers to focus on creating new features instead of maintaining basic infrastructure. Blackroll's confidence in this approach is grounded in strong early signals: coaching cohorts on EAZE, the sleep and recovery platform acquired by Blackroll, showed a 91.6% active engagement rate—insight that directly shaped the AI coaching strategy now being built on Google Cloud.
Following the launch of the companion app for German consumers in July, Blackroll plans to expand its digital services internationally by using AI Studio to translate its German recovery library into other languages, starting with Dutch.

Longer term, Blackroll plans to open the platform to its global community of trainers and therapists across 37 countries. While the company relies on this network of experts to deliver hands-on care, keeping them certified with the latest instruction methods can be a slow process. To streamline this, Blackroll is testing Google Cloud Skills Boost to be inspired on how to host their own digital certification program. This allows independent practitioners to easily learn the latest research, use intelligent coaching tools, and share best practices online, creating an ongoing learning loop that benefits experts and consumers alike.
