Dutch EdTech company BeSmart Campus leverages Google Cloud and Gemini models to offer every student a personalized AI tutor, directly integrated into educational content designed with teachers.

The history of BeSmart Campus is rooted in the personal experience of its founder. Traumatized by difficulties in mathematics during his schooling, he experienced the humiliation of failure before meeting a teacher capable of explaining concepts differently to him. When he noticed his daughters encountering the same obstacles years later, he decided to act. "I still remember standing in front of the class wearing a dunce cap, with the teacher telling me I was a hopeless case in math. Yet, with the right teaching approach, I ended up studying the subject at university. We want to offer this chance to overcome failure by having access to different pedagogical approaches to every child and ensure that no talent is wasted simply because the system lacks the resources to adapt teaching to each student's level of understanding," confides Dennis Rot.
In its early days, BeSmart Campus organized "Learning Festivals" or intensive learning days, within schools. Faced with success among students, parents, and schools which repeatedly requested interventions, Dennis Rot quickly realized the limits of his in-person model. Especially since the pandemic abruptly accelerated the shift to online learning, the demand for individualized support then exploded.
The idea of an online approach became essential, but Dennis refused to turn to static videos: "If the student doesn't understand a point, they can't ask anything. Interaction is essential," he recalls.

And it is precisely this need for interaction that led the founder of BeSmart Campus to turn to AI, and more specifically to the Gemini models: "We needed technology capable of understanding a student's question, but also the exact context of the video being watched and the precise moment they interrupt it to ask their question. When we discovered the capabilities of NotebookLM and the underlying power of Deepmind and the Gemini models, we realized we had a solid basis for our solution. I had never before seen a model capable of grasping our educational content with such finesse and interacting with it in real-time."

In practice, the BeSmart Learning platform relies on a fluid technological synergy made possible by the integration of Gemini. To structure the educational content of BeSmart Campus and prepare the initial models, BeSmart Campus used Gemini models to analyze and organize the video explanations produced with teachers. The core of the system is real-time contextual tutoring: lessons take the form of short explanatory videos, which the student can pause at any time to ask a question. Thanks to its multimodal understanding, Gemini immediately identifies the relevant section and provides a response consistent with the pedagogical method designed by BeSmart Campus, acting as a true digital extension of the teacher.

This functionality promotes a level of individualization impossible to achieve in a traditional classroom. The student progresses at their own pace, revisits a concept, asks for rephrasing, or explores another example. Each interaction triggers a precise response from Gemini. Crucially, this personalized instruction operates within the secure and controlled environment of the BeSmart Campus smart learning platform, ensuring that Gemini's impressive reasoning capabilities are leveraged primarily to guide students through the platform's successful and proven learning modules. This ability to adapt teaching to the pace, needs, and difficulties of each individual makes Gemini a true personal tutor. Underlying this is the realization of Dennis Rot's initial vision: to avoid overlooking talent due to a lack of sufficiently individualized support.
Personalization extends to practice: the AI generates exercises in real-time adapted to the topic being studied and assists with correction.
When a student makes a mistake, Gemini doesn't simply provide the correct answer: it revisits the course logic, details the steps, and suggests another way to approach the concept. By reusing the explanations presented in the video, the AI reinforces understanding through contextualized repetition, a method impossible to deploy at scale in a traditional school environment.
"Gemini's strength lies in its ability to understand exactly what the student is watching and to respond following our own pedagogical logic. When a student stops on a detail and asks 'Why is there a blue circle here?', the AI revisits the steps taught in the video and reformulates with the method used in our bootcamps. Another advantage: the AI never gets impatient and can rephrase ten, twenty, or thirty times if necessary," emphasizes Dennis Rot.

The first operational version of the BeSmart Learning Platform was designed in only three months, thanks to Google Cloud’s orchestration, processing, and AI integration capabilities. "Without the robustness of Google Cloud services and the ease of integrating Gemini, we never could have developed such a complete prototype in so little time," acknowledges Dennis Rot, who highlights the importance of the technical and human support provided by the Google Cloud teams in this success.
Since the launch, the results observed in schools have been particularly encouraging. Initial tests conducted in institutions show a clear improvement: two classes allowed to use the platform for two weeks preceding exams achieved averages of 6.4 and 6.9 out of 10, while two other classes of the same level, prepared without the platform, showed an average of 5.0. Concurrently, teachers report a resurgence of engagement in class, particularly among children facing difficulties, while students value the possibility of reviewing at their own pace, revisiting a concept, asking for an additional explanation, or being guided step-by-step when they need it.
Presented at the Google AI Forum in Dublin (Ireland), the solution is now attracting interest from stakeholders worldwide. The challenges encountered in the Netherlands—teacher shortages, widening learning gaps, inability to individualize instruction—are, in reality, universal.
