Axis My India: Closing the skills gap and connecting people to social services with AI

Google Cloud Results
  • Enables business to scale its platform and app initially to support 1 million users

  • Doubled enrollment in a national insurance program during a pilot exercise

  • Optimizes cost across development, AI, and cloud infrastructure services

  • Keeps citizens’ personal data secure and ensures regulatory compliance

With Google Cloud AI and infrastructure services, Axis My India has deployed a platform and app that helps close the digital divide between men and women and rural and urban citizens to bring social and skill services to all Indian citizens.

While India has made great strides in improving connectivity, analysts continue to report gaps such as lower access to digital services for women compared to men and rural residents compared to their urban counterparts. In this context, bridging the digital divide in India to connect millions of people to social and job services is a formidable task. But it’s a challenge market research company Axis My India is working to overcome by combining cloud, AI, and digital services with human assistance. Axis My India worked with award-winning Google Cloud Partner Niveus Solutions to build a multilingual super-app for Android and iOS devices using Google Cloud’s AI and machine learning services.

An established provider of election and business market research, Axis My India is well-equipped to close the digital gap. The business counts globally-recognized brands among its customers, has a presence in 30-plus cities across India, and is supported by a 2,000-person workforce. “We aim to connect and resolve the problems of today for India’s households, and this led us to launch a platform that can provide access to information and listen to the needs of a common man,” says Girish Upadhyay, Chief Marketing Officer, Axis My India.

Delivering access to relevant social and skill services

The Axis My India project aims to build awareness of and access to government social welfare programs among citizens. “There are about 5.5 trillion rupees in India for government social welfare schemes and development, but utilization remains low due to lack of awareness; for example, many people do not know how to apply for new employment programs,” explains Upadhyay. The project also looks to identify citizens’ aspirations and skill needs, so it can direct them to relevant training content and professional opportunities to increase their income. Once these processes are completed, citizens can work with Axis My India personnel to complete any in-person tasks required to access relevant programs.

Axis My India needed to look beyond core criteria such as cost, scalability, rich AI services, and multi-language support when seeking a technology provider for its app and platform.

As a market research company looking to build a technology platform, we needed a provider that could work with us over the entire journey, and that was experienced at working with customers to deliver consumer-facing products that used AI at scale. This prompted us to go with Google Cloud.

Meeting key operational criteria including security with cloud

We worked closely with Google Cloud’s Professional Services Organization (PSO) to ensure we treated customer data in accordance with India’s legislation and regulations and our own internal governance requirements.

The business also engaged Niveus Solutions as a specialist in Google Cloud to help ensure successful delivery of the project. Axis My India’s platform and app now use a wide range of Google Cloud services to realize the organization’s business objectives while meeting compliance and security requirements and fulfilling operational criteria such as high availability, scalability and  performance.

The business’s cloud infrastructure that adheres to strict security compliance standards through a Google Cloud landing zone architecture protected by firewalls and network security services through Cloud Armor. HTTPS-enabled API layers ensure encryption in transit while all data is encrypted at the storage layer within Google Cloud using the Advanced Encryption Standard algorithm. APIs are secured using short-lived authentication tokens.

“We worked closely with Google Cloud’s Professional Services Organization (PSO) to ensure we treated customer data in accordance with India’s legislation and regulations and our own internal governance requirements,” explains Upadhyay. “This included following the PSO’s checklist of everything we needed to do from a security and data privacy perspective.”

The infrastructure deployed with Niveus Solutions’ assistance incorporates complementary services that meet requirements that range from performance to controlled access to sensitive data. Cloud Load Balancing provides high availability and low latency for the platform and app, while internal access to sensitive data is determined by role-based access and is strictly controlled through Identity and Access Management (IAM). The app runs in a microservices architecture and Axis My India leverages Google Kubernetes Engine for containerized deployments.

AlloyDB for PostgreSQL provides fast, highly available and accessible data management, while Cloud Storage and Cloud CDN serve static content on the website and app. The application technology stack includes Flutter, Node.js, and Next.js, while Firebase provides push notifications and Pub/Sub the data integration pipeline. Access My India has also integrated Places API to provide location-based services and features via the app and platform.

The business works with Niveus Solutions to use Vertex AI to build the generative AI experiences infused into its platform and app. Recognizing the importance of voice in making the service accessible to a cohort with varying literacy levels, Axis My India has utilized a number of AI-powered Google services to add voice inputs into workflows, including Speech to Text AI, Text-To-Speech AI, Cloud Translation API and Natural Language API. Through these Google Cloud services, the platform and app supports about 13 of the languages spoken in India with more anticipated as the product matures, broadening its addressable market.

“Developing a platform that will impact the lives of 250 million households was a great responsibility and I am proud that our project, engineering, and delivery teams did a fantastic job with the “a” app. I am pleased with how we have contributed to making the Government of India's initiatives more accessible to the people. The app is proof of how the right use of technology can give access to information at the right time to citizens in need, especially those who are underprivileged”, explains Suyog Shetty, Chief Executive Officer, Niveus Solutions.

Optimizing cost and positioning the app for a huge addressable market

This architecture meets all of Axis My India’s requirements, including access to billing aligned with cloud resource usage. “With Google Cloud, we have optimized our cost model across development and cloud infrastructure, and this is considerably more cost effective than some other providers we’ve used in the past,” says Upadhyay.

In a pilot exercise, Axis My India has already delivered positive outcomes at the National Health Authority (NHA), which oversees the country’s flagship public health insurance initiative. With a key NHA objective being to enhance awareness and foster involvement in the program, the Axis My India team used the platform and app to raise awareness, assess user eligibility, and guide eligible citizens through the registration process.

In a pilot across five villages, the number of enrollments in the insurance initiative increased from 1,532 to 3,068 people, and the exercise is being rolled out to other states in India.

Axis My India is now poised to realize its vision of providing services to 1 million people before extending to more markets such as the 65% of people in India who live in rural and regional areas. “Thanks to Google Cloud, the user potential of the app is massive,” concludes Upadhyay. “We have started with the key problem the common person in India faces and opted to solve it with a combination of rich technologies and services from Google Cloud combined with the human touch provided by our people.”
