AMD modernized its SAP stack in just 18 months, migrating to the cloud and delivering new functionality for teams across the company with Google Cloud.

Getting more from SAP on the cloud

AMD is on a mission to bring advanced computing to every customer in all corners of the market. The company has become a leader by focusing on the needs of its customers and using innovation to deliver products to support them.

AMD relies on SAP solutions to support its diverse products, systems, and business ventures, including dozens of warehouses and operations around the world. The IT team built a significant on-premises environment to run its large SAP footprint, but over the years it became more difficult to make changes to the infrastructure and support modern SAP updates. AMD was on an old instance of SAP, and when new business initiatives came along, the IT team often had to create manual workarounds, even for daily tasks.

Our experience with Google Cloud made us feel comfortable. Our collaboration with Google Cloud and SAP allowed us to design an environment capable of delivering exactly what we needed while simultaneously navigating a complex migration.

Corporate VP of IT, AMD

After acquiring Xilinx, AMD accelerated its cloud migration to run the latest SAP solutions at scale. To successfully integrate the two environments, AMD needed the additional flexibility and functionality of cloud infrastructure to handle the Xilinx business and IT landscape, as well as the latest functionality from SAP S/4HANA.

AMD chose Google Cloud for its updated SAP S/4HANA application, trusting its performance and reliability based on their existing electronic design automation (EDA) workloads.

Migrating while avoiding disruptions to customers

Google Cloud was by our side from day one of the engagement. With their expertise, we now have a highly agile architecture where we can make changes to help our teams get more out of the foundational SAP environment.

Working closely with Google Cloud, AMD migrated from an on-premises version of SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) to SAP S/4HANA and RISE with SAP on Google Cloud.

Google Cloud advised AMD at every step of the engagement on topics ranging from choosing the right regions to avoid latency for global sites to understanding best practices for integrating RISE with SAP on Google Cloud. An executive steering committee met weekly to discuss this major business transformation.

The executive team prioritized avoiding disruptions for customers. AMD successfully went live with Google Cloud, helping ensure no delays for ordering, customer service, and shipping. In less than 18 months, AMD migrated to Google Cloud, updated its SAP implementation, and integrated the former Xilinx environment.

Another critical business priority for the migration was implementing Disaster Recovery (DR) to meet compliance. AMD chose Google Cloud DR functionality that satisfies strict Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) requirements, while also meeting its internal Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Migrating to Google Cloud has enhanced AMD SAP environment functionality and performance. The company has significantly increased transactional data volumes in the past few years, especially after integrating Xilinx systems. With Google Cloud, adding compute resources is easy. AMD now runs SAP S/4HANA on Google Cloud, accessing the latest features like Integrated Business Planning (IBP) for sales and operational planning and Advanced Available-to-Promise (aATP) for order scheduling.

AMD is leveraging Google's AI capabilities to improve user experiences with SAP. The company has already developed several generative AI chatbots that allow finance, HR, and customer service teams to use natural language to find the information they need from SAP systems. One chatbot in customer operations pulls data related to order scheduling and deliveries to help answer customers' questions quickly, while a finance chatbot built with Vertex AI and Cortex Framework helps accelerate cashflow forecasting.

AMD is a leader in high-performance and adaptive computing, powering products and services that help solve the world's most important challenges.
