We agreed that the technology solutions that existed for attorneys were mostly terrible. As for software designed specifically to help attorneys find the proverbial smoking gun, it just didn’t exist. That was the genesis of Altumatim.

David Gaskey

CEO, Altumatim

Altumatim began when a bioinformatics software engineer and his intellectual property attorney were working on a copyright infringement lawsuit over a software the engineer had written. Over the course of the proceedings, Vasudeva Mahavishnu witnessed the many months that David Gaskey spent drudging through mountains of documents to build his case — a tedious and time-consuming discovery process that traditional legal software failed to support. Recognizing this gap in the legal tech market, the pair decided to combine their expertise in software development, data science, and litigation to build something better.

“We agreed that the technology solutions that existed for attorneys were mostly terrible,” Gaskey says. “As for software designed specifically to help attorneys find the proverbial smoking gun, it just didn’t exist. That was the genesis of Altumatim.”

Gaskey and Mahavishnu aimed to revolutionize the way the legal profession investigates electronically stored information by developing an AI-driven discovery and document review tool that could efficiently navigate and analyze vast datasets, empowering attorneys to uncover crucial evidence to support compelling legal arguments. By focusing on the importance of story to getting the best possible result in legal cases, Altumatim effectively helps attorneys tell their clients’ stories and achieve superior case outcomes.

Building secure-by-design legal tech

When evaluating technology solutions to support the Altumatim platform, Gaskey and Mahavishnu prioritized security, scalability, and customer support. Their search led them to Google Cloud, which met the company’s strict security requirements while offering flexible infrastructure that would support its growth.

The majority of existing legal software is built on other platforms, but those providers could not guarantee that Altumatim’s customer data would be secure when using its large language model (LLM) offerings. For a company operating in the legal sector, this was a non-starter. “Confidentiality is critical for our business,” Mahavishnu explains. “Google Cloud offers assurance that the data our customers put into our platform will be protected, which gives everyone peace of mind.”

Google Cloud also seamlessly supports Java, Altumatim’s preferred programming language, which provides better scalability and speed when compared to other offerings. This allows Altumatim to offer its clients significantly higher throughput, accelerating access to usable insights with unprecedented accuracy.

“There’s a lot of great technology out there, but at the end of the day it’s people who make the tech better,” Mahavishnu says. “The response and support we’ve received from Google Cloud from day one has been amazing, and that’s why we wanted to work with them.”

Working with Zazmic, a Google Partner that helps businesses get the most out of Google Cloud, Mahavishnu and Gaskey were able to scale their solutions sufficiently  to bring their vision to life.

Transforming legal processes with Gemini for Google Cloud

At Altumatim we’re taking a groundbreaking leap as the first LLM-driven application, where every user interaction is mediated by an LLM. Building on our innovative LLM operating system, we are advancing into the realm of self-learning, autonomous entities through an agentic framework. Everything is driven by Gemini.

Altumatim's platform uses Vertex AI with Gemini to provide their customers a more efficient and accurate way to analyze unstructured data, which increasingly bogs down workflows. Unlike traditional AI tools that simply process information or answer questions, Altumatim autonomously conducts deep dives into massive datasets, analyzing millions of documents to identify those that relate to the key elements of the story and provide a comprehensive analysis to support winning legal arguments and anticipate counterarguments.

“Legal professionals deal with a lot of unstructured data, and making sense of all that information is a complex process,” Gaskey says. “Vertex AI with Gemini allows us to put the data into a structured story-based framework, which makes it easier to understand and enables attorneys to refocus their efforts on how to best tell their clients’ stories instead of having to expend significant resources hoping to find the best evidence.”

For example, Altumatim used Vertex AI to develop an AI agent for customers who represent clients in mass tort litigation, which can include thousands of  plaintiffs. Manually going through just the documents filed with the court to identify relevant information would require significant time and effort. Altumatim's platform, using Gemini, efficiently processes any number of such documents, extracting nearly 100 different data points from each with full-context paragraphs, and produces detailed reports—all with 99% accuracy—to support the daunting task of managing such litigation.

Gemini also helps corporations and law firms quickly analyze large batches of documents and provides yes or no responses based on specific queries. For instance, it may be necessary to determine which documents are relevant to the issues in a case or whether a document is protected by the attorney-client privilege. In many cases, this process requires many people working for months to analyze the documents at a cost well into seven figures with a low 67% accuracy due to human error. Altumatim's platform can process the same number of documents and provide in-depth explanations of each yes or no decision in such cases in less than two days—with greater than 90% accuracy, precision, and recall—at a fraction of the cost.

By using Gemini as the foundation for these applications, Altumatim is pioneering a transformative paradigm in working with unstructured data that extends beyond legal technology. Altumatim’s AI-driven tools can significantly enhance many different workflows and decision-making processes.

“Most people are familiar with data-driven applications, which rely on a database to power its operations,” Mahavishnu explains. “At Altumatim we’re taking a groundbreaking leap as the first LLM-driven application, where every user interaction is mediated by an LLM. Building on our innovative LLM operating system, we are advancing into the realm of self-learning, autonomous entities through an agentic framework. This evolution positions us at the forefront of creating intelligent systems that continuously adapt and optimize the solution a customer needs. Everything is driven by Gemini.”

Altumatim is the story-based eDiscovery platform that fully automates document review and finds the most important evidence by learning the story the attorney wants to tell. Altumatim cuts through the noise in the ever-increasing volume of electronically stored information (ESI) and reduces the cost and time required to find the information that is critical to making informed decisions about whether or how to proceed with a matter and ultimately how to present the most compelling case at trial.
