Surescripts migrated 30.5B annual transactions off legacy on-premises hardware to AlloyDB, boosting application deployment velocity while safeguarding a 99.998% network uptime mandate.
Surescripts, the nation’s leading health intelligence platform, serves as a critical connection point linking pharmacies, pharmacy benefit managers, health plans, life sciences companies and health systems across the United States. Processing 30.5 billion transactions annually, the platform operates under a strict availability model where routine maintenance windows or unexpected service outages are unacceptable. Historically, Surescripts managed its high-throughput operational workloads across three secure, on-premises data centers anchored by traditional OLTP infrastructure. However, to accelerate digital transformation, eliminate physical hardware procurement delays, and mitigate catastrophic data center risk, the company launched a comprehensive multi-year modernization strategy to transition their production workloads directly into Google Cloud.
The database platform migration followed a strict, phased optimization path designed to systematically eliminate infrastructure risks. Surescripts initially deployed an air-gapped disaster recovery environment inside Google Cloud to validate system recovery stability. Following this success, the engineering group initiated a massive data lake transformation, shifting complex analytics, legacy Hadoop applications, and OLAP workloads into BigQuery. This migration strategy culminated in migrating their core transactional microservices to Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and shutting down their physical data centers. Throughout this architectural overhaul, which involved re-architecting complex legacy stored procedures into lean application logic, Surescripts avoided customer disruption. They executed the entire cloud shift quickly while simultaneously maintaining or improving their strict production availability metrics.
Migrating 30.5 billion annual transactions off traditional on-premises hardware while safeguarding our strict availability mandate was an extraordinary platform engineering challenge. Google Cloud gave us the reliable infrastructure needed to execute this multi-year data transition quickly, with limited operational disruption.

While moving core virtual machines into a cloud environment validated their processing frameworks, Surescripts required a modern relational database engine to sunset legacy architectures completely. On-premises, the data team was forced to wire multiple databases together using complicated replication logic. This self-managed replication setup proved to be fragile, creating constant operational failure risks and demanding endless manual maintenance overhead from the database engineering staff. To modernize this tier, Surescripts selected AlloyDB for PostgreSQL to back their core transactional records, initiating a systematic database conversion process across their primary healthcare portfolios.
Our legacy database replication setup was incredibly fragile and consumed endless engineering velocity. Upgrading to AlloyDB delivered native, automated high availability and allowed us to manage our database clusters entirely as code through Terraform, ensuring system stability.

AlloyDB immediately introduced operational simplicity, delivering native high availability, automated backup scaling, and managed software patching routines. The engine’s intelligent separation of compute and storage enabled Surescripts to safely route heavy, non-write workloads to automated read replica pools, removing analytical strains from primary transactional write pathways. Most importantly, AlloyDB resolved a platform engineering challenge by allowing the team to treat infrastructure as code. Surescripts integrated database definitions straight into automated Terraform and Ansible workflows, shifting from manual, brittle bash scripting to version-controlled configurations using Flyway. Furthermore, the fully managed platform framework allowed Surescripts to safely establish a secure, multi-region architecture across separate Google Cloud zones, maintaining their strict data governance profiles effortlessly.
Consolidating their core database footprint onto a fully managed Google Cloud architecture has radically accelerated Surescripts deployment velocity. Liberated from manual hardware procurement cycles, physical provisioning, and complex database patching schedules, the data engineering group reclaimed tremendous operational velocity. Rather than managing basic infrastructure stacks, former database engineers were reallocated directly to high-value product development, using advanced SQL logic to build, anonymize, and tokenize highly secure datasets. This architectural agility allowed Surescripts to securely process over 10,000 automated application deployments over the past year alone.
This scalable data foundation has dramatically accelerated the launch of high-impact analytics and intelligence applications leveraging BigQuery and AlloyDB unique capabilities. Concurrently, the team deployed its Master Patient Index (MPI) workload, the critical heuristic engine that conducts patient matching directly onto AlloyDB.
“Given the frequency our MPI is called, it’s imperative that the response times are very low latency to avoid becoming the bottleneck in transaction processing times. Compared to our prior implementation, AlloyDB had a better p99 query response time which was integral to the success of our migration,” says Dave Tauzell Senior Principal Software Engineer, Surescripts.
This high-performance architecture also fuels next-generation AI agents that retrieve historical medical records to auto-populate complex insurance prior-authorization documentation. By automating these administrative bottlenecks, Surescripts reduces hours of paperwork down to seconds, ultimately ensuring that patients receive their life-saving prescriptions at the pharmacy counter faster. Through the power of Google Cloud, Surescripts is evolving from a data transit network into a true engine of modern, intelligent healthcare delivery.
