DORA Awards winner Signify illuminates the future of smart lighting with Google Cloud

Google Cloud Results
  • Rapid scaling from zero to millions of devices

  • Reduced lead time to production from weeks to days for faster feature delivery

  • Cost-effective operation with a small, stable team of fewer than 10 FTEs

  • High-speed feature deployment with multiple production deployments per day

Signify used Google Cloud to build and scale their Philips Hue smart lighting system, connecting millions of devices worldwide with a seamless, real-time user experience.

The new way to deliver a seamless smart lighting experience

Signify wanted to provide users with a smart lighting experience that mirrored the simplicity and responsiveness of traditional wall switches. To achieve this, they built their Philips Hue platform on Google Cloud, using Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) for low latency and high availability. This enables them to manage millions of devices, handling hundreds of millions of user requests daily with minimal delay. Users experience a real-time response when controlling their lights through the Philips Hue app, creating a seamless and intuitive smart home experience.

Going from providing lights to a lighting experience requires state-of-the-art technology that delivers fast response times while keeping cost in control. GKE helped make this possible.

Why Google Cloud?

With GKE and Cloud Run, we can focus on business demands instead of worrying about cloud availability. Google Cloud’s flexibility allows us to respond to highly seasonal traffic, ensuring a seamless experience for our customers whenever they use their lights.

Signify chose GKE because it delivers low latency and easily handles seasonal traffic spikes. Its scalability keeps costs under control, automatically adjusting resources up or down based on demand. This ensures optimal performance during peak usage periods while minimizing expenses during quieter times.
