Rentokil Initial supports 30,000 active daily Gemini users across the global organization
Developed a bespoke, functional AI assistant for field technicians within just six months
Scaled "On The Go" application across multiple markets with approx 20,000 technicians and sales people
Enabled bidirectional audio streaming through Gemini Live for a hands-free technician experience
Rentokil Initial partnered with Telana to deploy a Gemini-powered assistant that provides field technicians with hands-free, real-time service and customer data.

As a global leader in pest control, Rentokil Initial manages a dynamic workforce of over 65,000 colleagues worldwide. While the company has built its collaborative foundation on Google Workspace since 2008, leadership recognised a vital opportunity to modernise the daily workflows of its frontline technicians. Historically, technicians often had to manually dig through siloed systems and legacy documents just to piece together a customer's site history.
The primary hurdle was data accessibility. Critically, time-sensitive information, such as past pest identifications, building entry codes, and open compliance recommendations which were buried across disparate databases. Rentokil Initial set out to eliminate this administrative friction, elevate service delivery, and empower technicians to step onto every site fully briefed. To accelerate this vision, the company established a dedicated AI team tasked with converting complex, scattered data into natural, actionable, and mobile-friendly summaries for the field.
The widespread use of Gemini across Rentokil Initial, combined with the massive excitement around Gemini Notebook's audio capabilities, showed us what was possible. Gemini for Google Workspace was absolutely essential during this ideation and discovery phase, serving as the ultimate catalyst for how we are completely reimagining our frontline operations.

Partnering with Google Cloud partner Telana, Rentokil Initial developed "On The Go" (OTG), a generative AI-powered assistant designed for hands-free interaction. Using Gemini’s advanced capabilities and Telana’s engineering expertise, the team built a solution that utilises internal APIs to provide conversational access to customer data. A standout feature was the implementation of Gemini Live, which enables bidirectional streaming so technicians can talk to the app as they drive to their next site.
"The audio experience was really important," says James Tatham, Account Director at Telana. "The use of Gemini Live allowed us to have a super interactive channel with the technicians, which was a game changer in terms of how they interacted with the app."
The development process was remarkably agile, moving from inception to a pilot in Buffalo, New York, in just six months. To ensure the tool met real-world needs, the team conducted "ride-alongs," shadowing technicians in the field to gather feedback and fix issues in real-time. This approach was critical in moving beyond consumer-level AI to an enterprise-grade tool that could operate in demanding environments—even in the middle of a New York winter.
Telana helped Rentokil Initial establish a flexible architecture with Firebase Hosting, Firebase Authentication, and Firebase Functions creating a fast and secure environment that powers the frontend. The ADK agent is deployed to Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform to help easily monitor performance, manage sessions, and scale as necessary.
"We chose ADK for its ability to leverage multi-agent systems to orchestrate complex workflows," says Andy Whelan, AI Architect at Rentokil Initial. "We can now easily extend the platform’s functionalities as new features or data sources need to be integrated as independent agents without disrupting the core architecture."
Bidirectional streaming communications are connected through a regional Cloud Run service, providing the lowest possible latency and most flexible scaling capabilities. Finally, the API-first architecture helped bridge data silos to pull service history and recommendations into a single stream.
A key goal of this project was to reduce time spent on-site retrieving disparate customer information, training manuals and service history.
Gemini Live bidirectional streaming with Telana made a huge difference in the user experience. This hands-free, conversational access to critical customer data allows our technicians to stay informed while on the move.

OTG demonstrated the potential for AI to become an active partner in the field, putting real-time knowledge and decision support directly into technicians’ hands. I see significant opportunities for technology like this to empower people, accelerate learning, improve operational efficiency, and create a better customer experience.
Philip Burger, ACE
Branch Manager for Buffalo NY, Rentokil Initial plc
The pilot program in Buffalo delivered immediate results, even winning over long-tenured employees who were initially skeptical of AI. One technician, a 20-year veteran of the company, went from being a skeptic to the person providing the most ideas for future features. By providing quick, natural language summaries, OTG increased operational efficiency and allowed technicians to stay informed without manual research.
Technicians heavily favored the bidirectional audio interface in Gemini Live for hands-free site briefings. Overall, those who participated in the pilot program reported a significant reduction in the time it took to gather all relevant information.
Rentokil Initial also set up a rapid feedback loop to help identify and resolve issues within a day or even hours.
Looking ahead, Rentokil Initial plans to scale OTG to a wide user base of field technicians in multiple regions, addressing the challenge of a variety of non-English languages. The roadmap includes agentic workflows for visit summaries, route optimization, and pest identification using image uploads. As Rentokil Initial continues to lead the industry, OTG stands as a testament to the company’s culture of innovation and its commitment to using Google Cloud technology to support its most valuable asset: its people.
Rentokil Initial is a global leader in pest control and service delivery with a workforce of over 65,000 colleagues. The company prioritizes innovation to provide industry-leading service to its residential and commercial customers.
