Picsart's global creative revolution began with a profoundly personal moment nearly 15 years ago when co-founder Hovhannes Avoyan found his teenage daughter crying. She loved to draw and had shared an artwork on a social network, only to receive devastatingly negative comments from online users.
Driven by a father's instinct to restore her confidence, Avoyan envisioned a positive digital sanctuary where artists could safely collaborate, co-create, and share encouraging, positive vibes. Guided by the internal mission to "make everyone creative," the team set out to completely democratize art. In 2011, operating out of Armenia, the startup strategically launched its first application exclusively on Android.
Android devices were highly affordable locally, and the engineering team was already deeply familiar with Java technology. Because Apple's ecosystem was highly protected and difficult to run in Armenia at the time, Android provided an open market with significantly lower initial competition.
The founding story started almost 15 years ago. Let's do something for my daughter and create an app which could help her to be creative but also be in a positive environment with other creators when she can collaborate, co-create and get positive vibes.

Picsart dominated the Android store categories for years, and when it finally rolled out an iOS version a couple of years later, immediate cross-device brand familiarity fueled instant success.
"The founding story started almost 15 years ago. Let's do something for my daughter and create an app which could help her to be creative but also be in a positive environment with other creators when she can collaborate, co-create and get positive vibes," says Hovhannes Avoyan, Co-founder and CEO of Picsart.
Today, Picsart has scaled into a creative content powerhouse, boasting over 2.5 billion installs worldwide. The platform empowers a highly diverse global user base, ranging from Gen Z teenagers and social media influencers to solopreneurs selling items on Etsy. However, transitioning from simple manual photo filters to automated asset generation created massive behind-the-scenes technical challenges. Supporting token-intensive, video-based workloads required an incredibly agile backend ecosystem. Picsart needed infrastructure capable of rapid, near-real-time scaling to handle intense spikes in usage without inflating costs. They also required secure, globally accessible, and highly affordable storage to host a massive wave of user-generated videos and images. Crucially, to prevent debilitating interoperability issues, multi-vendor updates, and complex multi-contract management, Picsart sought a single, unified technology partner offering a comprehensive native stack from infrastructure to advanced AI.

To resolve these architectural hurdles, Picsart chose to build its core environment on Google Cloud nearly nine years ago, establishing a trusted, single-vendor relationship. To store the massive daily influx of user media safely, the team deployed Google Cloud Storage, while running their virtual infrastructure on Google VMs.
They adopted Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) to right-size their applications dynamically in real time within a containerized framework. To manage intense video processing constraints, the infrastructure team designed a custom autoscaling system. Instead of inefficiently renting thousands of GPUs around the clock, Picsart dynamically provisions GPU infrastructure on demand to absorb peak traffic during viral trends, and downscales automatically when the surges pass, heavily optimizing operational costs and speed.
Picsart's core AI strategy runs entirely through the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, giving them immediate access to frontier multimodal models like Gemini, Veo, and Nano Banana.
We used a Gemini reasoning model that would take the user prompt, which is very short, and then rephrase it in a way that's the best for the Google model. It's happening in the back end without hindering user experiences.

Adhering to the principle that technology should remain completely invisible to the user, Picsart crafted sophisticated AI chains. When a user enters a basic, short description, a backend Gemini reasoning model acts as an agent to automatically rephrase and enhance the prompt based on optimized prompting techniques discovered in Google’s technical documentation.
If a user wants a cartoon animation of themselves, they simply upload a selfie. Google Nano Banana instantly transforms that photo into a cartoon style, establishing the animation's foundational first frame. This frame is then combined with the Gemini-enhanced prompt and fed directly into the Veo video-generation model to output seamless, high-quality video clips. To take this further, the team built "Picsart Flow"—a highly visual tool where creators connect multiple modular nodes, such as image generators, video processors, dubbing tools, and music creators, into a unified, automated asset pipeline.
"We used a Gemini reasoning model that would take the user prompt, which is very short, and then rephrase it in a way that's the best for the Google model,” says Narek Hayrapetyan, Head of Product at Picsart. “It's happening in the back end without hindering user experiences."
Picsart has also begun testing the Gemini Omni, a new multimodal video creation and editing tool, behind the scenes with a particular focus on prompt-based editing.
“This is a fundamental game-changer for how creators communicate their visions to Picsart,” says Hayrapetyan. “With a simple text prompt, Gemini Omni allows users to execute complex VFX, like swapping out a character or transforming the environment, while flawlessly preserving the core elements of their footage.”
Picsart has found that Gemini Omni has been especially useful in post production thanks to the ability to adapt content on the fly, as well as text control given its ability to generate and edit text within videos–a capability generative models had up until now struggled to achieve.
“Multimodal generative AI is undeniably the future of video creation,” adds Hayrepetyan. “With Gemini Omni, we’re thrilled to bring this powerful, granular technology to 130 million Picsart users worldwide.”

By anchoring its operations to Google Cloud's cohesive stack that includes Google Cloud Storage, Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), and Agent Platform, Picsart has seamlessly integrated over 120 unique AI models into its platform. The engineering team collects billions of data events every day to execute rapid, continuous A/B testing at an immense scale. These exhaustive tests provided a surprising consumer insight: users consistently prefer ultra-fast models over slower, marginally higher-quality options.
Because their consumer audience struggles with an "immediacy complex" and demands rapid output, Picsart purposefully prioritized speed, balancing quality by using efficient models like Gemini Flash and Nano Banana.
This frictionless delivery creates a self-sustaining growth flywheel. Instead of spending heavily on aggressive marketing campaigns, Picsart experiences massive organic growth—90% of its users discover the platform strictly through brand trust, viral content sharing, and word-of-mouth recommendations.
Google Cloud is uniquely positioned in this space because Google Cloud owns the whole stack from hardware and TPUs and infrastructure all the way up to applications. I have a strong belief in the future of Google Cloud.

Co-founder and CEO, Picsart
In a beautiful full-circle moment, Avoyan’s daughter graduated from art school and now works directly at Picsart as a Product Manager, actively shaping tools for the next generation.
Looking forward into 2026, Picsart is fully leaning into a rapidly shifting, agentic ecosystem where creators operate as versatile generalists.
This shift allows creators to focus on high-level strategy while letting AI manage the mechanical details. Supported by Google Cloud’s end-to-end hardware, TPUs, and software layers, Picsart remains exceptionally agile, continuously rewriting its roadmap every few months to champion the future of democratized art.
"Google Cloud is uniquely positioned in this space because Google Cloud owns the whole stack from hardware and TPUs and infrastructure all the way up to applications. I have a strong belief in the future of Google Cloud," says Avoyan.
Founded in 2011 to provide a positive, supportive ecosystem for artists, Picsart has grown into a leading creative platform boasting over 2.5 billion global installs. The application enables individuals, solopreneurs, and businesses to effortlessly design, edit, and share high-quality visual media across digital channels.
