Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) boosts engineer efficiency by 30% to accelerate innovation
Halves user-facing search latency for a faster app experience with Cloud Storage
Frees up 1.5 engineering days a week from manual infrastructure tasks
Cuts transaction drop rate to under 1% to improve reliability with Cloud SQL
Nirmit Bharat automated its infrastructure, freeing its engineers to innovate and deliver a faster, more reliable app for its users.

Life before Google Cloud was quite unpredictable. Manually scaling our infrastructure was challenging; if we missed the timing, some requests would get dropped. We needed a platform that could handle unpredictable traffic automatically, freeing our engineers to focus on building features instead of firefighting.

As a subsidiary of the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), Nirmit Bharat's mission is to create an open and inclusive digital commerce ecosystem for small businesses, farmers, and artisans across India. Through its DigiHaat app, Nirmit Bharat makes the ONDC network accessible to local sellers and artisans, helping them reach more customers nationwide.
Maintaining a stable and reliable platform was a challenge, especially during festive deals that caused sudden traffic spikes. With limited managed services and auto-scaling capabilities, engineers had to scale the infrastructure manually, leading to high latency and the risk of dropped user requests.
Instead of being focused on developing new features, the engineering team had to spend up to one and a half days every week just managing the infrastructure.
This constant firefighting slowed down their release cycles and hindered their ability to innovate on the core product. To address this, Nirmit Bharat sought a more automated and reliable solution that would free up its engineers to deliver mission-critical features.
Nirmit Bharat migrated its platform to Google Cloud, with Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) in Autopilot mode as the cornerstone of its new architecture. The self-managed environment automatically handles the scaling and resources of its services, immediately freeing the team to focus on innovation instead.
This shift resulted in a 30% increase in efficiency for the engineering team. With this newfound time, engineers tackled a high-impact, user-facing project that had been previously delayed: enhancing the DigiHaat app's search functionality. This dedicated work led to a 50% reduction in search latency for users, meaning they now get the results they're looking for two times faster.
To support the platform's transactional reliability, the team uses Cloud SQL to manage all business-critical data, including user profiles, orders, and payment information, which has helped reduce transaction drop rates to under 1%.
The major outcome we achieved by moving to GKE Autopilot is that our engineers' efficiency has increased substantially. They are no longer spending most of their time managing the infrastructure, so they can focus on building new features.

The architecture relies on Cloud Storage to host static assets, such as product images and vendor logos, ensuring fast content delivery to the app. The entire environment runs on Compute Engine nodes that sit behind GKE, providing the secure and scalable foundation for all workloads.
By assigning the heavy-lifting of infrastructure management to Google Cloud, Nirmit Bhahrat's team can focus on what matters most: helping small businesses, farmers, and artisans thrive online. As DigiHaat grows faster and more reliable, shoppers across India will enjoy a smoother experience, opening new doors for inclusive digital commerce in the years ahead.
