Unifying a fragmented security posture

Data is the backbone of modern security operations. Google Cloud and Netenrich worked together to provide the visibility and scale that other options couldn't.

Imagine trying to keep a watchful eye on a bustling creative company with over 7,000 employees and 48 offices across the globe, all while managing a lean security team of just eight people. That was the challenge facing Alexander Wold, Global Cybersecurity Director of leading marketing and technology services partner Monks.

Clients often turn to Monks for solutions like crafting tailored, outcome-focused campaigns to modernizing critical technical infrastructure. This makes security critical for everything that Monks does.

As Monks grew through a series of mergers, its security infrastructure became a fragmented mix of systems and data pipelines that made a clear, unified view of threats difficult to achieve, increasing the risk of missed alerts and delayed response times. Monks decided to consolidate its security ecosystem, choosing Google Cloud SecOps and Netenrich to do so.

"Monks is constantly creating and bringing new applications to market," says Alexander Wold, Global Cybersecurity Director at Monks. "That velocity, along with the varied security needs of our new services–spanning from simple dashboards to very complex data processing systems–made Google Cloud Security and Netenrich the right partners for us."

Stronger security with less effort

Monks has long used Google Cloud for development due to its flexibility, which allows Monks to quickly spin up and spin down resources. Google Cloud's native security solutions make it easier to add reliable security to all client environments, such as Google Cloud Armor for protection against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

Google Cloud Armor is particularly useful for the flagship Monks.Flow AI ecosystem for marketing orchestration. Because it's native to Google Cloud, Monks does not need to leverage third-party integrations for load balancing or DDoS prevention needs and instead enjoys a simplified, centralized experience.

Application architecture can be complicated depending on client requirements. Being able to use native Google Cloud security solutions to protect these environments has been a lifesaver.

Data sits at the center of Monks' security philosophy, as the company works to leverage the best and most current intelligence to quickly quell threats. This was a key reason Google SecOps stood out from the competition.

"Google Threat Intel gives us exceptional threat intelligence that is far more comprehensive and cost-effective compared to other options on the market when included in Google SecOps," says Wold.

Google SecOps centralizes security data for 7,000 employees and 10,000 endpoints, giving the security team a holistic view of the company's digital landscape. With Gemini embedded directly in Google SecOps, engineers simplify the examination of security issues, eliminating the need for complex query languages. This technology-driven approach frees up the lean security team to focus on larger strategic tasks.

Netenrich's services run on top of Google SecOps, providing expert detection engineering and threat hunting. By mapping data against the MITRE ATT&CK framework, Monks now has more comprehensive threat coverage across its environment.

This combined solution analyzes threats at scale, reducing the number of events that require human intervention by 95% and accelerating Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR) by 92%, turning tasks that once took days into actions completed in minutes or seconds.

All of this translates to a lean Monks security team that is better prepared to cover product security, cloud governance, and policy writing.

Monks used Google Cloud Marketplace to transact with Netenrich—a process that reduced procurement from months to weeks. This experience has inspired Monks to use the marketplace more frequently. "We had never used the Marketplace before at Monks, but it was incredibly straightforward," says Wold. "I recommend it for anyone who wants to streamline procurement."

From reactive to proactive security

With Google Cloud and Netenrich, we're delivering the security performance and quality of a team twice our size.

Google Cloud and Netenrich provide Monks with new ways to contain threats with ease.

These efficiency improvements allow Monks' security experts to focus on complex, high-value problems. "We're not just reacting, but being proactive about security," explains Wold. "By freeing up our time, we can concentrate on better security engineering, which leads to fewer overall incidents. The result is a positive feedback loop where we're constantly improving security."

Internal IT and engineering teams now have direct access to valuable security data through custom dashboards, helping them detect "shadow IT" instances in real time. Netenrich also helps the security team get faster technical support and answers by connecting with Google Cloud leadership to find a solution quickly.

For Wold, one of the biggest advantages of the new security platform has been its impact on the work-life balance. "Any solution that decreases morale is very risky as it opens us up to mistakes caused by fatigue or frustration," explains Wold. "Google SecOps is the opposite. Engineers love working with it. I can sleep better because I know we're protected."
