Midnight Foundation scales regulation-ready Web3 with Confidential Computing

Midnight Foundation uses Google Cloud and Confidential Space to deliver verifiable zero-knowledge privacy for Web3 apps.

Building a verifiable, zero-trust data bedrock for decentralized privacy

Midnight Foundation architecture

The Midnight Foundation stewards the Midnight network—a fourth-generation Layer-1 blockchain built for secure, compliant, and private decentralized applications.

Public blockchains, however, can inherently expose transaction data, creating privacy barriers for enterprise adoption and regulatory compliance such as GDPR. And generating zero-knowledge (ZK) cryptographic proofs locally on client mobile devices or laptops causes latency of several to tens of seconds while rapidly draining device batteries. To resolve this, Midnight Foundation worked with Google Cloud and Google Cloud partner BCW Group to offload heavy proving workloads into cloud-based Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs).

Without trusted hardware that can be attested to and can’t be modified provided by a hyperscaler like Google Cloud, users would have to perform all zero-knowledge proving locally. Confidential Space gives us provable hardware confidentiality that unblocks mobile and enterprise adoption.

Confidential Space (under the Confidential Computing umbrella) and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Confidential Nodes form the core backbone of Midnight's zero-knowledge Proof-as-a-Service (zkPaaS). The system uses Google Confidential Space attestation for workload verification, and the verifier supports PKI trust anchors, while different environments are strictly separated for security.

Working with BCW Group, the Midnight Foundation took deployment from concept to live production in just two months. Most importantly, Google Cloud Attestation service unblocked critical security prerequisites required for commercial wallet integrations, such as the Lace wallet.

By open-sourcing their zero-knowledge service reference architecture and Terraform Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) configurations, Midnight Foundation enabled distributed developers to stand up private containers seamlessly, cutting third-party developer onboarding time from hours down to under one minute.

Scaling agentic AI smart contracts and
enterprise Web3 compliance

We have fundamentally expanded how developers build private applications. By embedding zero-trust attestation directly into our cloud infrastructure, we deliver a scaling model that gives enterprise partners complete confidence in our underlying network security.

Ben Beckmann

Chief Technical Adviser, Midnight Foundation

With Google Cloud Attestation integrated, Midnight Foundation focused on accelerating developer adoption and operational security. BCW Group developed attestation plumbing and deployed autoscaling Managed Instance Groups (MIGs) to support production-scale operations.

To lower the entry barrier for building privacy applications, the company, in collaboration with the partner, built an AI coding assistant using Google AI Studio | Gemini API. Trained specifically on Midnight’s Compact smart contract language, the tool allows developers to scaffold complex privacy workflows in seconds using conversational prompts.

Operational governance is reinforced through immutable cryptographic attestation signatures, which serve as non-repudiable audit artifacts for enterprise legal and compliance teams without requiring manual operational audits. Meanwhile, Grafana dashboards running on Google Cloud deliver real-time observability across TEE workloads, tracking proof generation velocity and payload sizes. To reinforce protocol-level security, Google Cloud directly operates a federated validator node on the Midnight network. Additionally, eligible projects building on the network can access up to $200,000 in Google Cloud credits through the Google for Startups Web3 Program.

Ultimately, this operating layer—secured by the Google Cloud Attestation service—ensures that rapid network expansion never compromises data protection. The infrastructure provides the foundational agility needed to turn complex zero-knowledge cryptography into seamless, trustless interactions. As Beckmann puts it: “Unblocking trusted execution environments with Google-managed key attestation was our single biggest technical win. Google Cloud enables us to run live zero-knowledge services that protect user privacy while meeting enterprise compliance standards.”

The Midnight Foundation is an organization dedicated to advancing the development, adoption, and real-world impact of the Midnight network, the privacy enhancing blockchain project developed by Shielded Technologies.
