Replacing manual operations with AI-powered traceability

Luxia Agro is an Argentine company specializing in the import of phytosanitary products for the country's agricultural sector. With a core team of just 10 people, the company has built a reputation for quality and service in a market where competition is intensifying rapidly.

As generic products flood the Argentine agro market, standing out requires something larger importers cannot easily replicate: agility, precision, and a level of personalized service that turns every import operation into a competitive advantage.

That ambition ran directly into a structural problem. The entire import operation, from purchase orders to customs clearance, ran on informal processes. Orders were created using phone messages. Documents lived in people's heads or scattered across email threads with no central system, no traceability, and no historical data.

One person managed the entire flow, spending 80% of their time on manual data entry and leaving almost no room for strategic work. "A highly qualified person was dedicating 80% of their time to 100% manual activities," says Jorge Burattini, CEO and Director. "That meant they simply could not dedicate themselves to strategic tasks. They had become a data entry operator."

Before Google Cloud, a single change mid-route could derail our entire tracking system. Gemini changed that completely. By embedding its intelligence into our logistics engine, we automated 80% of our workflow and gained an incredible level of flexibility. Google Cloud allowed us to bypass the market hype and put AI to work where it truly matters.

The answer was the heart of the business: the import process itself. Partner Nider recommended Google Cloud and its Gemini models, more specifically Gemini 3.5 Flash, as the most prepared option in the market, and for a company that values trust in its partnerships, that recommendation was all it took.

Automating every import step from vendor email to port arrival

With Google Cloud in place, Luxia Agro built a comprehensive foreign trade management platform that replaced every informal process with a structured, traceable, and largely automated flow.

When you receive the bill of lading, it is sometimes impossible to detect where the container number is. It can be a stamp, it can be written by hand, it can be on the side. And Gemini finds it every time. That is something truly magical.

The platform runs on Cloud Run, with Cloud SQL managing the database and Cloud Storage handling all import documents. At the center of everything is Gemini, which acts as the intelligence layer across the entire operation.

When a vendor email arrives—even with unorganized .zip archives—the system automatically extracts and classifies multi-format documents, including Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and packing lists. It maps data to the correct step in the import roadmap, cross-checks purchase orders against proformas, flags discrepancies, coordinates with customs agents, and generates mandatory Argentine customs QR codes and shipping marks, all without human intervention.

"From nothing to having a system that does all of this on its own," notes del Fresno. "It sends purchase orders directly to the supplier, receives the contract, pursues the signature, sends the signed contract back, and continues through every step."

The platform's standout capability is end-to-end container tracking. Every shipping container carries a unique identifier buried within Bill of Lading (BL) documents—often as a faded stamp, a handwritten note, or low-resolution scan. Gemini accurately detects and extracts the BL tracking numbers, connects directly to shipping carrier tracking APIs, and dynamically recalculates and updates real-time Estimated Times of Arrival (ETAs) directly within the company's central ERP.

"It has never brought an incorrect container number," del Fresno adds. "Not once. And that traceability, that search for information, has been working without issues from day one."

The system also allows mid-route modifications to purchase orders without breaking records, something the previous process could not handle at all.

Proving that small businesses can compete at enterprise scale

The results are already visible. Luxia Agro automated 80% of its foreign trade workflows, reduced labor hours by 50%, cut manual error rates by 50%, and increased operational agility by 80%.

The import manager who once spent 80% of their time on data entry now has capacity for work that actually moves the business forward, including managing imports from the United States that were previously impossible to take on.

That shift didn’t come without resistance. When the project was first presented to the team, someone walked to the whiteboard and wrote: "We have to update ourselves to stay ahead." The fear that AI would replace jobs gave way to something different once the project went live.

"It became clear that using AI applied specifically where it generates value does not mean losing work," del Fresno reflects. "It means the possibility of dedicating time to different tasks."

By freeing up 50% of administrative labor hours, the team unlocked the bandwidth needed to scale operations to new international routes—such as managing direct imports from the United States. Building on this operational foundation, Luxia Agro is now turning that same intelligence outward: leveraging historical import data and automated pipelines to power client-facing predictive analytics and navigate agricultural market dynamics with greater precision.

For Del Fresno, the lesson extends far beyond Luxia Agro.

AI is not a project for multinationals only. Small companies are more dynamic and more flexible. If they manage to apply AI effectively and efficiently, they will be unstoppable. Those that do not incorporate it into their technology investments will end up losing market share.

"AI is accessible to everyone, but you have to know where to apply it," she observes. "It is not about bringing AI to your company just to say you have it. You have to think where it will help you generate the value you need. Small companies that make that investment will be unstoppable."
