Engineers spent dedicated time on on-call (OC) tasks due to manual ticket handling and frequent repetitive queries, especially in a remote/hybrid environment.
LiveRamp's key technology goals for the OC automation project were modernization, cloud-enabled scalability, and AI-driven operational efficiency. They aimed to eliminate manual ticket routing, speed resolution, and minimize repetitive support work. Prior IT environments relied heavily on manual ticket handling, and high context-switching overhead, creating engineering bottlenecks. The objectives were to automate ticket assignment using a fine-tuned AI model on historic JIRA data, introduce a Slack bot for automated real-time responses by leveraging team-specific data, and trigger infrastructure workflows directly from JIRA for fast resolution.
True operational value lies in delivering a seamless, unified user experience across channels like Slack, web UI, and Jira, enabling users to get support wherever they work. LiveRamp's on-call (OC) automation solution streamlines operational tasks for engineers through three core innovations: AIOps Jira assist, an AI Slack bot, and OC automation. The solution started with Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform to predict Jira ticket assignment using historical data, later switching to Gemini Pro for complex ticket resolution. When a new OC ticket is created, Jira automation triggers a Cloud Function to classify and comment on the appropriate component, enabling precise assignment and reducing service level response times.
Slack bot, running in a Cloud Function, provides real-time answers by querying a Glean API (leveraging OpenAI models and integrated with Slack, Confluence, and JIRA) tailored to team data. A Feedback API iteratively enhances response quality. Additionally, the OC automation handles resolving tickets and monitors system failures to auto-resolve issues. All automation capabilities were exposed as APIs using the OpenAPI specification to integrate with Jira. This multi-layered architecture accelerates issue resolution, minimizes manual intervention, and boosts team productivity for engineers globally.
LiveRamp leverages these advanced AI tools to streamline on-call workflows, directly enhancing DORA metrics like deployment frequency, lead time, and reliability. CI/CD integration is seamless, with deployment through GitHub Actions and automated Jira-triggered infrastructure pipelines. This transformation centralized automation in the cloud, streamlined workflows, and enabled continuous feedback-driven improvement, directly impacting all four key DORA metrics by accelerating cycle time, reducing operational drag, and strengthening engineering outcomes at scale.
