Beyond spreadsheets: Building a single source of truth

Just three years ago, Interclínica’s data landscape was defined by manual effort and significant delays. The organization relied heavily on Excel, with critical business and clinical decisions often based on information that was only updated once a month. As a network of high-complexity clinics facilitating 1 million consultations annually and nearly 30,000 surgeries per year, Interclínica recognized that relying on ‘gut feeling’ for resource allocation, such as managing expensive operating rooms or specialized medical staff, was a recipe for operational inefficiency.

The search for a more reliable solution led them to choose between the Microsoft, AWS, and Google Cloud ecosystems. After considering Power BI and Azure, Interclinica chose Google Cloud and Looker because it aligned with their data and cost strategy. The Chief Data Officer, Alan Miroslav Sepulveda Kriz, identified the power of the semantic layer as the essential ingredient for establishing a single source of truth, which was also a crucial foundation for use with AI tools, since it eliminated the need to reprogram their context. Unlike other tools, Looker allows Interclinica to centralize the definition of KPIs, ensuring that when a doctor, nurse, or manager requests a metric, the response is consistent across the entire organization.

The semantic layer was critical because it allowed us to democratize access to information. If you ask for a metric, independent of the area you are in, you get a consistent answer. This centralized context is essential for giving the right information to AI.

The implementation began with a low-cost pilot using Looker Studio and BigQuery, which allowed the team to prove value within just six months. This success paved the way for a more robust infrastructure using Dataflow and Cloud Composer to centralize data in BigQuery. By moving to the Looker platform, Interclínica didn't just buy a dashboarding tool; they invested in a data strategy designed to support their 2024 vision of becoming an AI-driven healthcare network.

SofIA: Achieving radical velocity with conversational AI

Despite their users enjoying what they considered ‘pristine dashboards’, Interclínica identified a last mile data gap for new teammates who may not rapidly know which filters to apply or which dashboard to open. To bridge this gap, they utilized the conversational analytics API, along with Looker, to build "SofIA," an AI-powered interface that allows users to interact with data as if they were talking to a colleague.

SofIA represents a fundamental shift from menu-driven navigation to intent-driven discovery. In the high-stakes healthcare environment, this means a nurse can simply ask about bed occupancy levels through a chat interface on a phone rather than navigating complex reports or applying manual filters. This accessibility is enhanced by SofIA’s ability to monitor KPIs proactively; if bed occupancy exceeds 90%, the system automatically alerts leadership every 30 minutes, enabling immediate action to balance medical demand with available resources.

This efficiency has allowed Interclínica to do more with less, reallocating 150 analyst hours every single week. Instead of spending time on manual data retrieval, the team has successfully upskilled its workforce.
