Fluent Commerce

Empowering retailers to build trust in AI through descriptive, prescriptive, and conversational analytics

Google Cloud Results
  • Leveraged LookML as a semantic layer to drive trusted metrics to business users

  • Reduced the cycle for complex data customization from a six-month engineering project to ad hoc business queries

  • Implemented agentic conversational analytics within the UI to provide real-time insights for store and warehouse staff

Fluent Commerce integrated Looker to power Fluent Analytics, enabling retailers to move beyond static reports into a self-optimizing system. By using conversational AI grounded in LookML, they empower business users to turn data-rich environments into high-value insights and immediate actions.

Overcoming the "data-rich, insight-poor"
retail challenge

Global retailers often struggle with rigid legacy systems that limit their ability to customize data views or react quickly to market shifts. Fluent Commerce recognized that their customers were data rich but insight poor, requiring a solution that matched the flexibility of their core order management system. As Fluent Commerce expanded its relationship with Google Cloud, the team sought to replace their traditional, static BI solution with a modular, embedded analytics experience that could support a multi-cloud strategy.

We've built our entire business around allowing a better level of flexibility and composability than our competitors. Our customers want to be in the driver's seat of how they drive their business, and Looker was the first big part of opening that door for us.

Building a foundation of trust with LookML

To move toward a truly self-optimizing system, Fluent Commerce prioritized building deep organizational trust through data accuracy and accessibility. They used LookML to create a sophisticated semantic modeling layer that acts as a vital abstraction between low-level technical data storage and the end business user. As David Miller, SVP of Engineering at Fluent Commerce, explains, "LookML helps by describing the right data for the right customer. It bridges the gap from the engineer to the business user, enabling the surfacing of relevant data insights based on user persona, which is crucial for fulfillment operations staff."

By augmenting raw data with this descriptive metadata, the platform ensures that any subsequent AI tooling, particularly conversational agents, is grounded in a reliable foundation. This is essential for retailers who, as Miller notes, "keep getting told to automate and leverage AI but first need to get their data right." This "get the data right" philosophy is the cornerstone of their strategy to move from descriptive analytics (what happened) to prescriptive analytics (how to make it happen).

The implementation of LookML allows Fluent Commerce to maintain a comprehensive data dictionary of over a hundred key business KPIs, ensuring consistency across diverse retail environments. Instead of forcing business users to navigate complex database schemas, the semantic layer presents data in a language they understand. This approach not only accelerates the time-to-insight but also ensures that the AI's recommendations are viewed as credible and actionable by human decision-makers, who must "earn their stripes" and build trust before fully automating billions of dollars in revenue.

Democratizing data through
conversational analytics

While LookML provides the structural foundation, conversational analytics serves as the intuitive interface that empowers non-technical users to interrogate their data directly. David Miller observes that retailers are frequently "data rich and insight poor," and to solve this, Fluent Commerce has integrated conversational analytics agents directly into their UI. This capability transforms retail operations, moving them away from rigid systems where data customization was previously a significant bottleneck for business growth.

The real value of conversational analytics lies in its ability to facilitate a seamless "insights-to-action" loop. In traditional retail environments, if an ecommerce manager wanted to know why a specific store was rejecting 5% more orders than others, they would typically have to request a custom report from an engineering team. This process could take weeks or even months. With Looker-powered conversational agents, they can simply ask the question in natural language and receive an immediate, data-backed answer. This democratization ensures that insights are no longer trapped in the IT department but are available on the shop floor and in the warehouse, where they can immediately impact the customer experience.

For example, during the NRF demonstration, Fluent Commerce showcased a new AB sourcing capability. Using conversational-style agents, users can hypothesize operational changes, such as adjusting geoproximity settings to fulfill orders from a store closer to a customer to improve the experience, put those changes into action, and then immediately report on the results using the same data stream. This level of business agility allows retailers to experiment with their physical operations as easily as they might experiment with a website's layout.

Holger Lierse, Principal Product Manager, notes that this represents a significant cultural shift for retail operations. "It will be a journey for retail operations to go from seeing hard numbers on a screen to chatting with a chatbot," Lierse explains. Having a "sidekick" integrated as a side panel on the dashboard provides critical context that raw numbers alone cannot offer, such as explaining "what happened to this specific order?" or "why am I seeing this trend?" By utilizing the MCP toolbox to build these agents, Fluent Commerce has created a platform where business users can have a literal conversation with their data, accessing insights exactly where they need them most.

Conversational analytics offers a solution for business users to conduct ad hoc queries. It puts data insights in the hands of business users right where they want to query and access that data.

This approach is already seeing massive traction across the Fluent Commerce customer base. Despite rolling out the first phase of Fluent Analytics just before the peak Black Friday season—traditionally a period when retailers "freeze" all system changes to avoid risk—the platform achieved a remarkable 33% adoption rate among customers. This success underscores the retail industry's urgent hunger for tools that provide not just raw data, but the agility to turn that data into a distinct competitive advantage in real-time.
