Scaling a complex platform without a DevOps team

Filum was founded to help Asian enterprises — from retailers to banks — transform fragmented customer data into actionable business intelligence to ultimately build deep customer loyalty.

In the early stages, the team managed data pipelines using manual Python scripts and spreadsheets. As the startup onboarded large retailers such as ZUS Coffee and GS25, data volumes surged. The manual approach failed to scale: the team found themselves trapped managing hundreds of integrations across different client tools instead of building the intelligence engine they promised.

Lacking specialized DevOps engineers in-house, Filum sought to adopt a fully-managed solution to address this issue. It selected Google Cloud for its serverless architecture, specifically adopting BigQuery to handle schema-less data ingestion without the need for complex provisioning or ongoing administration.

We didn't have a specialized DevOps engineer in-house. We chose Google Cloud so we wouldn't have to worry about that and still benefit from DevOps while focusing entirely on developing our product.

Building a "Zero-Ops" AI engine

To eliminate the need for infrastructure management, Filum adopted a fully serverless stack. By leveraging Cloud Run functions and Cloud Run, the team treats each of the hundreds of client integrations as a standalone function that auto-scales instantly. This setup allows the platform to handle high-velocity data in real time without manual oversight.

The serverless architecture significantly reduced development time, saving us weeks of integration effort.

In practice, when a consumer contacts a retailer such as ZUS Coffee from social media, the platform orchestrates the interaction seamlessly:

  • Incoming messages enter Pub/Sub, which queues the traffic to prevent data loss during sales rushes.
  • Dataflow pipelines stream this raw information directly into BigQuery, creating a unified view of the customer journey.
  • Build with Gemini 3 analyzes unstructured interactions — such as call logs or chat transcripts — to extract sentiment and generate summaries, which are visualized in Looker Studio.

Delivering stability and lower costs to clients

The shift to serverless has fundamentally changed Filum’s operating model. By automating infrastructure management, the company now manages hundreds of integrations with a team of two engineers — a workload that would typically require ten staff members.

The serverless architecture allows each integration to be auto-managed. We have zero monitoring or maintenance time, compared to an estimated four hours per week previously.

With lower operational overhead, Filum can now offer custom integrations at a reduced cost, passing the value on to its clients. This operational stability also guarantees uptime for critical retail clients, contributing to exceptionally low churn rates.

Looking ahead to 2026, Filum is adopting an AI-first product strategy. The team plans to integrate Vertex AI into internal workflows, empowering every department — from design to engineering — to accelerate development.

With Google Cloud acting as an incubator that provides early access to technology and strategic guidance, Filum is well-positioned to release an overhaul of its product in 2026, bridging the gap between raw data and actionable business intelligence.

Filum is an AI-powered Unified Customer Experience Platform that empowers businesses to transform fragmented data into actionable insights to drive loyalty and sustainable growth.
