FAO uses Google Cloud to modernize agro-informatics platforms, expand global data access, and support food security through scalable, cloud-native innovation.

Scaling global agrifood innovation with a fully cloud-based platform

As a United Nations specialized agency focused on food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural development, FAO manages digital tools used by governments, researchers, humanitarian organizations, and the public worldwide. In the past, many of these systems ran on local infrastructure, which made scaling harder, slowed deployment, and complicated global collaboration.

Today, around 200 agro-informatics products run on Google Cloud, with approximately 20–25% migrated from legacy on-premises systems and the majority developed directly as cloud-native solutions. The number of tools and users keeps growing each year, expanding global access to agrifood data and insights.

FAO therefore needed a modern infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale geospatial data, advanced analytics, and globally distributed users while ensuring reliability and operational security. FAO started working with Google Cloud in 2018, building on an existing collaboration around geospatial technologies and data analysis.

Cloud adoption allowed us to scale our agro-informatics ecosystem globally while improving reliability and innovation, helping us deliver critical data faster to partners, governments, researchers, and the public.

Information Technology Officer, FAO

“Cloud adoption allowed us to scale our agro-informatics ecosystem globally while improving reliability and innovation, helping us deliver critical data faster to partners, governments, researchers, and the public” tells Eduardo Machado, Information Technology Officer at FAO.

Today, FAO’s cloud platform supports continuous innovation, broader global data access, and more resilient operations, helping deliver digital solutions that support food security, environmental sustainability, and agricultural development worldwide.

Enabling global agrifood decisions through the speed of cloud technology

With its cloud infrastructure in place, FAO now uses Google Cloud technologies to deliver data-driven agrifood intelligence worldwide. Cloud-native development has enabled faster deployment of tools that transform complex datasets into accessible insights supporting food security, environmental monitoring, and agricultural planning for a wide range of users, including national ministries, technical agencies, researchers, NGOs, universities, and domain experts working across the agrifood system.

For example, analysts working on food security monitoring can access geospatial datasets through the FAO Agro-informatics Platform (AIP) hosted on Google Cloud infrastructure, combining satellite data, agricultural indicators, and climate information to assess risks and guide policy responses. Researchers and national ministries can use these platforms to support evidence-based decisions on crop productivity, water usage, and environmental sustainability.

Key Google Cloud technologies supporting these initiatives include:

  • Compute Engine and serverless environments for scalable application hosting
  • BigQuery and analytics tools for processing large agrifood datasets
  • Gemini platform capabilities supporting advanced data analysis and experimentation
  • Managed databases and messaging services that improve reliability and security

These capabilities have translated into tangible operational benefits:

  • Faster rollout of agro-informatics solutions
  • Improved data accessibility for global stakeholders
  • Greater system reliability and security monitoring
  • Enhanced collaboration across internationally distributed teams

By consolidating diverse data sources into cloud-based platforms, FAO has strengthened its ability to deliver timely, actionable insights while maintaining the flexibility to expand services as global agrifood challenges evolve.

Future-ready innovation with AI and global collaboration at scale

With its cloud foundation established, FAO is now focusing on expanding innovation capabilities to support its global mission. A key priority is exploring artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, and automation to enhance how agrifood data is collected, analyzed, and shared with stakeholders worldwide.

Access to evolving cloud technologies allows us to keep innovating while supporting our global mission, from advanced analytics to AI-driven tools that can strengthen food security and sustainability worldwide.

Eduardo Machado

Information Technology Officer, FAO

FAO teams are actively experimenting with AI-driven solutions, including intelligent search, data analysis tools, and emerging machine learning capabilities. These technologies are expected to improve how users discover information, interpret complex datasets, and make faster evidence-based decisions related to food security, climate resilience, and sustainable agriculture.

Cloud infrastructure has also enabled a more distributed and collaborative way of working. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, FAO teams were able to maintain operational continuity thanks to cloud-based systems accessible globally. This experience reinforced the value of flexible digital infrastructure for an organization like ours, operating across multiple regions and time zones” confirms Eduardo Machado.

Collaboration remains central to FAO’s approach. The organization works closely with partners, research institutions, governments, and humanitarian actors to expand access to agrifood data and strengthen national capacities to use innovative technologies. This collaborative ecosystem supports FAO’s broader objectives of improving production, nutrition, environmental sustainability, and livelihoods worldwide.

FAO’s continued evolution has also been strengthened by its long-standing collaboration with GO Reply, a Google Cloud partner that has worked alongside FAO teams to support infrastructure design, performance optimization, and secure data management. Through this partnership, FAO has modernized legacy components and improved both efficiency and reliability of its data pipelines, while building new resilient systems capable of ingesting, processing, and serving complex agrifood datasets, including large-scale geospatial and statistical datasets, to globally distributed users at scale.

Looking ahead, FAO plans to continue building cloud-native solutions that enhance data accessibility, foster innovation, and help address global food challenges through scalable, technology-enabled approaches.

FAO is a UN specialized agency working with 194 countries and the EU to fight hunger, improve food security, support sustainable agriculture, and strengthen resilient agrifood systems worldwide.
