Overcoming legacy infrastructure barriers
to accelerate rural financial inclusion

Dvara Kshetriya Gramin Financial Services (KGFS), a non-banking financial company, was set up with the mission “to ensure that every individual and every enterprise has complete access to financial services.” The organization works toward achieving this goal through its network of branches in remote rural areas that offer a range of financial products and services. It operates a unique branch-based business model across underserved villages.

Dvara KGFS specializes in a paperless, completely digital assisted onboarding experience, providing critical rural retail group loans to women alongside MSME loans to local entrepreneurs. However, delivering an entirely paperless financial ecosystem in Tier 5 and Tier 6 areas requires an exceptionally agile digital infrastructure. Before standardizing its core environment on Google Cloud, Dvara KGFS operated on a rigid hybrid framework, with key systems split between another cloud provider and traditional on-premise data centers. This legacy setup introduced severe operational friction.

Launching new testing environments to validate proofs of concept (POCs) for new financial products was a slow process that typically took six to eight weeks, directly stalling business innovation.

The organization also faced a distinct structural hurdle: transaction volumes naturally spike aggressively toward the end of every month. Under the traditional data center model, it was impossible to accurately size for these peak periods.

Dvara KGFS was forced to choose between experiencing system difficulties during month-end spikes or making heavy, upfront capital investments into physical hardware that sat completely underutilized during normal business days. Recognizing that these hardware limitations and data center connectivity hops slowed down their national expansion, the team sought a scalable alternative.

Google Cloud eliminated upfront costs and gave us the elasticity to scale as we grow. We turned a multi-week bottleneck into a secure, low-latency infrastructure that powers our paperless branch network today, while building the exact foundation we need to become an AI-first organization of the future.

Unlocking digital elasticity, driving cloud-native agility, and an AI-first roadmap

Dvara KGFS began its transition to a cloud-native architecture on Google Cloud to achieve the scalability and reliability required for its evolving digital journey. Working closely with CloudNow, and later with partner Sela, the engineering teams collaborated on migration planning and reference architectures tailored to the business’s strict uptime requirements. Sela provided critical technical guidance, managing a complex, multi-step database update of older MongoDB versions to modern iterations seamlessly and with minimal downtime.

The real-world value of this cloud elasticity was proven in 2024 during the launch of an integrated omni-channel lead module connecting the company’s CRM and core loan origination systems. Within 20 minutes of launching, unexpected volume surges crushed the application layer. Because the infrastructure was built on Google Cloud, developers were able to instantly allocate more hardware resources to the system, completely restoring operations within 15 to 30 minutes before downsizing the environment back to baseline levels days later to optimize costs.

Beyond infrastructure flexibility, standardizing on the unified Google ecosystem, including Compute Engine and Cloud SQL, has allowed developers to spin up exact cuts of production data to safely isolate and simulate bugs. To drive digital adoption and ensure compliance in rural areas, Dvara KGFS integrates the Cloud Translation API, along with other solutions, to deliver all customer communications in local vernacular languages.

In a highly regulated landscape, earning the trust of rural communities requires an invisible but ironclad shield. To maintain compliance with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, Dvara KGFS deployed Google SecOps and Security Command Center, seamlessly automating threat detection to the point of successfully flagging even internal phishing simulations.

With a unified data warehouse on Google Cloud, the team is now sprinting toward a three-year goal to become a completely AI-first enterprise. By responsibly deploying secure LLMs and Vision AI, it is looking to transform legacy risk profiling into instant underwriting and intuitive conversational bots, bringing genuine financial dignity straight to the village doorstep.

Incorporated by Dvara Trust (a private trust), Dvara KGFS delivers complete access to financial services across remote rural areas using a unique, branch-based regional rural business model.
