Accelerating small business funding with Google Cloud

For small and medium businesses, fast access to capital can often mean the difference between seizing a new growth opportunity and falling behind the competition. Traditional financing, however, can be frustratingly slow and complex, holding businesses back when they really need to move fast. Business Capital is changing that. Its modern digital financing platform helps companies access the finance they need quickly and easily, delivering over $10 billion in funding to U.S. businesses over the last 15 years.

Business Capital’s ability to make streamlined financing decisions depends on being able to move quickly as an organization. However, its small technical team previously spent significant time managing its on-premises infrastructure, diverting them from more strategic work. To solve this, the company moved to Google Cloud. By using managed services, including Compute Engine and Cloud Run, the team no longer has to maintain hardware and can focus on supporting the business. As a company that handles sensitive financial information for thousands of businesses, Business Capital’s need for stringent security and access control were non-negotiable. With its tight access controls, strong encryption, and clear audit records, Google Cloud enabled the company to migrate with confidence.

We don't believe underwriting a small business should take weeks when the information to make a decision already exists digitally. We chose Gemini to turn 15 years of scattered deal history into organized, accessible business intelligence that our team can instantly query using the tools they already have.

Even with a modern cloud foundation, however, Business Capital still faced a challenge that delayed its funding decisions. More than 15 years of deal history, merchant notes, and business intelligence were scattered across Salesforce, email, and internal records. Finding past deal information often meant searching through multiple systems or asking long-term employees where to look. To answer this challenge, Business Capital turned to Gemini, using the agentic platform to unify its fragmented data and make it easily accessible to everyone.

“We don't believe underwriting a small business should take weeks when the information to make a decision already exists digitally,” explains Henry Pershin, Founder and CEO at Business Capital. “We chose Gemini to turn 15 years of scattered deal history into organized, accessible business intelligence that our team can instantly query using the tools they already have.”

Unifying scattered deal data to accelerate underwriting with Gemini

Working with the Google Cloud team, Business Capital established a unified data environment that connects Gemini directly to its existing tools. Data from Salesforce now lands continuously in BigQuery, while merchant documents are securely retained in Cloud Storage. Connecting Gemini to this single, searchable ecosystem means employees can use natural language prompts to instantly search and analyze 15 years of data securely across Google Workspace, bringing the information directly to the people who need it.

Our underwriters no longer spend 45 minutes manually reading documents for every submission. With Gemini connected to our data, the system automatically reads and extracts data from roughly 40,000 bank statement pages per month, cutting document review time to just six minutes.

For the underwriting team, reviewing applications previously involved manually reading through files and searching across platforms for precedents. Now, Gemini automatically surfaces relevant statements, historical deals, and supporting information. Underwriters begin their work with the most relevant information already organized for them, so they can immediately analyze the application and make faster, better-informed funding decisions.

This unified intelligence also empowers the sales floor. Account executives no longer need to ask the operations team to manually search for past deal information or funding performance. Instead, representatives securely ask Gemini questions in plain language—such as how a specific type of deal performed last year—and receive accurate, useful answers in seconds. As a result, they can serve merchants faster and build stronger client relationships.

“Our underwriters no longer spend 45 minutes manually reading documents for every submission,” says Pershin. “With Gemini connected to our data, the system automatically reads and extracts data from roughly 40,000 bank statement pages per month, cutting document review time to just six minutes.”

Building an AI-driven foundation for small business growth

Gemini has seen strong adoption at Business Capital, with roughly 100 employees engaging with it across 20,000 interactions each month. As a result, the company has been able to operate faster, reduce internal workloads, and accelerate business financing decisions.

Thanks to this transformation, Business Capital has reduced underwriting decision turnarounds by up to 50%, moving from a full business day to under six hours. This speed allows the team to increase its weekly underwriting submissions by 40% without adding headcount. On the sales side, empowering representatives to find answers instantly has reduced the requests sent to the operations team to manually search for historical deal information by 45%. With Gemini, Business Capital saves each employee about two hours of search time every week and has cut the ramp-up time for new sales representatives from six weeks to three. Migrating to Google Cloud has also helped the company lower infrastructure costs by 30% compared to its prior hosting arrangements.

To build on this success, Business Capital now plans to bring external lead information into BigQuery alongside its funding history, enabling the company to make more data-driven decisions.

It’s also exploring the use of AI agents with Gemini to automate the manual processes currently involved in securing renewals from merchants. In addition, the company is exploring the use of BigQuery, Gemini for business, and Gemini to develop custom lead-scoring models based on its own 15 years of performance data.

“Google Cloud gives us the tools for the future growth of our business,” concludes Pershin. “By making our historical data actionable with Gemini, we can put capital into the hands of small business owners faster than ever, providing them with the financial flexibility they need to seize new opportunities and grow.”
