Arya.ag used Google Cloud to enhance security, scalability, and compliance, thereby supporting farmers and businesses across India to improve their operational capacity and maximize agricultural commodity value.

From legacy systems to a modular and resilient architecture

With Cloud SQL, recovery takes minutes instead of hours. It’s transformed how we handle disruptions.

VP of Engineering, Arya

Arya.ag’s infrastructure was built on monolithic deployments, with unmanaged databases tightly coupled to application virtual machines (VMs). This setup created bottlenecks, lacked reliability, and offered no effective disaster recovery strategy. “Our databases were tied to VMs, and any failure led to significant downtime. We once spent over six hours restoring a production database,” shares Mohit Garg, VP of Engineering.

To address these challenges, Arya migrated its databases to Cloud SQL, decoupling them from the application layer. The company drastically reduced downtime with features like automated backups and Point-In-Time Recovery (PITR).

“With Cloud SQL, recovery takes minutes instead of hours. It’s transformed how we handle disruptions,” Garg explains. By eliminating manual intervention for database backups, Arya’s engineering team can now focus on optimizing workflows and delivering new features.

Arya transitioned to a Shared VPC architecture, segregating applications and databases across multiple projects. “The Shared VPC setup helped us organize our environment better, making it easier for teams to work without stepping on each other’s toes,” adds Garg. Previously, overlapping resource dependencies often delayed projects, but the new setup has streamlined workflows and reduced project turnaround times.

Arya also used Cloud Trace to build an in-house application monitoring toolkit for added visibility and reliability. This toolkit provided detailed visualizations of API and service performance, helping the team quickly identify and resolve performance issues. “For example, if an API or service isn’t performing well, Cloud Trace helps us pinpoint where the issue lies and take corrective action immediately.”

Raising the compliance and security bar

As a regulated entity governed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and ISO standards, Arya’s infrastructure lacked the necessary separation of sensitive workloads and proactive tools for threat detection, making it difficult to meet audit requirements. “We needed to isolate infrastructure for our non-banking financial company (NBFC)  operations to satisfy regulatory demands, while also safeguarding our systems from external threats,” says Garg.

To meet these requirements, Arya implemented a Shared VPC architecture to isolate its regulated NBFC operations from other infrastructure components, ensuring logical separation of resources. This setup facilitated audits by clearly demarcating critical infrastructure while also meeting compliance requirements.

Arya also utilized Cloud Armor, which provides both reactive and proactive threat protection. “There was an incident where we faced a DDoS attack from international sources in Russia and Romania. Cloud Armor helped us block illegitimate traffic in real time, and gave us the tools to monitor and prepare for future threats,” explains Garg. Security Command Center (SCC) was also introduced to centralize security management, allowing Arya to identify attack paths and strengthen enterprise-level defenses.

To further bolster security, Arya leveraged Secret Manager to securely manage credentials and API keys. The company minimized the risk of unauthorized access by keeping sensitive information like database credentials out of code repositories.

These solutions see Arya meeting stringent compliance standards, easing the audit process, and demonstrating robust protection against security threats. “With Google Cloud, I can confidently present the right certifications and policies to auditors, knowing our infrastructure adheres to the highest standards,” Garg adds.

Driving smarter decisions with deeper insights

With reliable data, we’ve seen a significant increase in customers adopting our online repayment platform, which aligns with our goal to digitize rural banking operations.

Inconsistent and inaccurate data made making timely decisions challenging for Arya's leadership team. “Previously, our data pipeline relied on manual processes, and the delays made it difficult to align technical, product, and business roadmaps effectively,” says Garg.

To automate data processing and deliver actionable insights faster, Arya implemented Dataflow and Datastream. With Dataflow, Arya processes large volumes of incoming data in near real time, ensuring that business teams have up-to-date information to make faster decisions. Meanwhile, Datastream replicates transactional data from operational to analytical systems, providing a unified view of customer and operational data without manual intervention.

Dataflow and Datastream run on Google Compute Engine, providing a scalable infrastructure capable of handling increasing workloads. "Compute Engine allows us to scale up or down dynamically, ensuring we’re always prepared to meet growing data demands without incurring unnecessary costs.”

The improved data flow enhanced collaboration across teams during Arya’s monthly OKR planning sessions. With faster and more precise reporting, teams could better align on product and business roadmaps. This led to the introduction of new customer-centric features, such as enhanced loan repayment options.

Customers can now make payments directly through the Arya app, reducing reliance on physical collection points and increasing convenience, particularly in rural areas. “With reliable data, we’ve seen a significant increase in customers adopting our online repayment platform, which aligns with our goal to digitize rural banking operations,” adds Mohit.

Arya took advantage of sustained-use discounts from Google Cloud to lower operational costs compared to their previous cloud provider. This move helped Arya scale its infrastructure while cutting cloud expenses by 20%, freeing up resources to invest in customer-focused innovations.
