With Google Cloud, Aella has built a digital banking platform that empowers millions with easy-to-access credit and innovative financial services.

Building a platform for financial inclusion

In the right hands, technology can be a tool for mass empowerment. Aella showed this in 2015 when it launched Nigeria's first digital lending platform, delivering much-needed credit services to the under-banked through a mobile app.

Prioritizing customer service and ease of use, Aella is now a fully-licensed microfinance bank with more than two million users, dispensing more than 164,000 loans every month.

"We try to do things a little differently from other lenders," says Godbless Uhunamure, Head of Product Management at Aella. "For example, we allow people to access loans irrespective of their credit score, and they can apply for it on their phones within minutes. Over the years we've added transfer facilities, savings solutions and really spent time perfecting our mobile app to provide just the right experience for our customers."

By late 2023, however, Aella had reached an inflection point. Its rapid growth had stretched its existing technology infrastructure to the limits, resulting in frustrating performance issues. At the same time, the company was about to dramatically increase the load on its servers as it transformed into a fully licensed microfinance bank. To drive this next phase of growth, Aella chose to build its new platform with Google Cloud.

Lifting legacy limits with Google Cloud

Google Cloud gave us the opportunity to design our infrastructure the way we wanted it, and it came with a very mature set of products for analytics and AI. If we were going to achieve our future goals, we knew that Google Cloud was the right choice for us.

As a tech-savvy company, Aella was an early adopter of cloud-based infrastructure, deploying Kubernetes clusters, the open source container technology developed at Google.

To support the company's ambitious growth objectives, the team at Aella understood that it needed more from its existing infrastructure , which was operating at reduced visibility and restricted updates. At times of particularly high traffic, the existing platform occasionally stalled, leading to expensive workarounds.

"We had reached the limits of our existing IT infrastructure in terms of visibility and operability," says Ebunoluwa Olanegan, Engineering Manager at Aella. "Google Cloud gave us the opportunity to design our infrastructure the way we wanted it, and it came with a very mature set of products for analytics and AI. If we were going to achieve our future goals, we knew that Google Cloud was the right choice for us."

Aella collaborated with Google Cloud partner Codematic to enhance its new technology platform. Working closely both in person and remotely, the collaboration was hands-on from the start. "Now that it had a microfinance banking licence, Aella needed a technical partner to help take its infrastructure to the next level," says Derek Vinebo, Head of Operations at Codematic. "With Codematic, the bank identified the key priorities of reducing costs and stabilizing the IT platform."

Delivering visibility and control with Google Cloud

Aella chose Google Cloud to deliver these goals for a number of reasons. Firstly, its managed services and clear pricing provided just the right combination of simplicity at scale that the bank needed. Secondly, Aella was already using Google Workspace with great success and moving its infrastructure to Google Cloud would help integrate and simplify operations across the bank.

Finally, and most strategically, Aella was drawn to the wealth of analytics and AI solutions from Google Cloud. "In our opinion, Google Cloud is the leader when it comes to providing infrastructure for AI, and Aella intends to take full advantage of that in the future," says Oluwayomi. "Aligning with Google Cloud now puts the bank in the best position to achieve its goals now and in the future."

The visibility we get from Cloud SQL, as well as Cloud Logging and Cloud Trace has really helped us to improve our services and applications. The great thing about Google Cloud is how integrated all the tools are. It's very easy to quickly observe the entire environment.

Moving to a new infrastructure while catering to the needs of two million customers could have been a daunting task, but Aella and Codematic approached the challenge with meticulous planning. By migrating in stages, the team was able to quickly course correct when it needed to and, most importantly, minimize disruption for its customers.

"We spent a lot of time thinking about what services to prioritize and how to migrate them to make the process as seamless as possible," says Oluwatobi Akintunlese, Senior Software Engineer at Codematic.

Because Aella's previous infrastructure was already built around Kubernetes clusters, the move to Google Cloud did not require a costly and difficult redesign. Instead, the bank now uses Google Kubernetes Engine to orchestrate its clusters and Cloud Run to manage its staging environments.

Cloud SQL has given Aella new levels of visibility into its database operations, making it easier to monitor and optimize performance. Meanwhile, BigQuery has equipped the data team with a powerful set of analytics tools.

Traffic spikes had been a challenge with the legacy platform. By using the Observability suite, including Cloud Logging and Cloud Trace, Aella built a series of alerts that help the team quickly pinpoint and resolve issues.

"The visibility we get from Cloud SQL, as well as Cloud Logging and Cloud Trace has really helped us to improve our services and applications," says Olanegan. "The great thing about Google Cloud is how integrated all the tools are. It's very easy to quickly observe the entire environment."

Empowering individuals and communities

The affordability and stability of Google Cloud means that we are no longer sinking costs into infrastructure or losing time and energy trying to fix the platform whenever traffic spikes. We can channel all those resources into innovation and building out new products and services for our customers.

With support from Codematic and Google Cloud, Aella kicked off its journey as a full-fledged microfinancing bank on a platform built for stability and sustainable growth. The results were immediate: following the migration, infrastructure costs dropped by 70%. In the months since, Aella's customers have experienced a faster, more reliable service, with uptime increasing from 95% to 99%.

As impressive as these achievements are on their own, it's their far-reaching effects that have allowed Aella to really shine. "The affordability and stability of Google Cloud means that we are no longer sinking costs into infrastructure or losing time and energy trying to fix the platform whenever traffic spikes," says Uhunamure, Aella's Head of Product Management. "We can channel all those resources into innovation and building out new products and services for our customers."

With Google Cloud, Aella has pioneered a "Debt-as-a-Service" (DaaS) model to further its mission of financial inclusion. By exposing services such as digital wallet, Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols, employee loans, same-day lending, and merchant business payment tools through API, Aella enables local businesses and agents to become financial service providers themselves, empowering both individuals and entire communities.

A key pillar of success for these services has been the stability of Google Cloud. "We recently did a project with a government partner that accessed seven million records via API in a single night and we didn't have any downtime," says Uhunamure. "They were shocked we were able to maintain that level of service."

Since acquiring its banking license, Aella has expanded both its customer base and its service offering in creative and impactful ways. But the company is not resting on its laurels. After making its mark in Nigeria, Aella is now looking to take its services into the wider African continent. It has also been experimenting with AI tools such as Gemini and Vertex AI for a broad range of use cases, from fraud detection to anti-money laundering to customer service agents to enhanced operations monitoring.

"We started as a loans company, but as we've expanded our services, we're also faced with a number of opportunities and challenges," says Uhunamure. "We believe Google Cloud, and the insights we can gain from its AI capabilities, will play a critical role as we continue to deepen and expand our services."

Aella microfinance bank is a digital-first bank empowering over two million Africans with seamless, secure, and accessible financial solutions.
