Using Vertex AI Search, Adani Group, a multinational conglomerate, has created a richer and more personalized search experience for its collection of monthly newsletters.

Taking on search with AI

Founded in 1988 as a trading business, the Adani Group has grown into one of India’s largest multinational conglomerates. With business entities across industries like mining, natural gas, food, infrastructure, and more, the company is fast evolving and understands the need to keep abreast of the changing demands of both its consumers and its employees.

To do that, the company is promoting a digital-first culture within the organization, and launched a-connect, a newsletter to keep employees across the organization informed. However, the Adani Group faced a pressing issue when digitizing its a-connect newsletter. With a growing database, it was important for users to be able to seamlessly search through the collection of articles to find the information they needed.

From the beginning, the organization knew that it needed a platform that would help a-connect meet several requirements. For starters, the search function needed to be scalable, readily available, and easily managed. For a seamless user experience, the platform also needed to be able to understand the user's search intent across text, images, and videos. Finally, having expanded functionalities like the capability to summarize and cite articles, as well as a chatbot integration, was crucial to the platform.

Adani found these capabilities with Google Cloud and the Vertex AI unified development platform for building and using generative AI. With access to more than 150 different models, including first-party, third-party, and open models, Adani Group had the opportunity to prototype, customize, integrate, and deploy its vision of the next generation of search.

Improving user experience with faster, more accurate search outcomes

Using Vertex AI Search, which is a part of the Vertex AI Agent Builder, Adani is able to pull both structured and unstructured data from its repository. With a-connect indexing data from multiple sources, data collaboration, and integration were challenges. However, Vertex AI Search empowers the new deployment to index a large amount of data and automate the pipeline, creating a fluid search experience without requiring lengthy deployment time. 

This new AI-based search indexes traditional text data and integrates multimodal search capabilities, including image and structured data, by indexing data extracted from URLs and making it available for search queries in real time. 

In addition, Vector Search transforms data into vectors, allowing the search engine to retrieve relevant information using semantic understanding rather than solely relying on keyword matching. This has resulted in faster and more accurate search outcomes, improving the overall search experience for natural language and even multimodal queries. Integrating data from enterprise sources and large language models (LLM)s enables more contextual search results, blending internal knowledge with external data insights that benefit from growing data volumes in a-connect.

Users also benefit from the supplementary features available through the search engine, such as summarizations, citations, and more. Complex and intricate information blocks can be condensed into more digestible and relevant snippets, and citations help ensure the credibility of the data found. The integration of LLM capabilities facilitates knowledge discovery, reshaping complex search tasks into more manageable undertakings.

Ensuring a firm foundation with a comprehensive tech stack

To support the LLMs of Google Cloud, Adani equips itself with BigQuery for large-scale data analysis and storage, Cloud Functions for backend services, and Dialogflow for chatbot and conversational AI integrations. These services work seamlessly with Vertex AI, ensuring the platform can scale and handle increasing data and user demands without compromising performance.

As a whole, users have experienced a significant reduction in average search query time, resulting in increased successful searches and user engagement. The speed of deployment was also swift, while tweaks and updates could be implemented seamlessly with the serverless technologies used for the platform.
