To reduce latency and\nincrease availability, choose the same region for your data and your\nCompute Engine instances, standard environment applications, and other services.\n\nThere are different location types:\n\nA [regional location](#location-r) is a specific geographic place, such as\nLondon.\n\nA [multi-regional location](#location-mr) is a large geographic area,\nsuch as the United States, that contains at least two geographic places.\nMulti-regional locations are only used for backups.\n| **Note:** Some organizations use an organization policy to restrict resource locations. If this type of policy affects your project, you can only select regions the organization policy allows. In the **Location** drop-down menu in the Console, the locations that are not allowed are unavailable. [Learn more](/resource-manager/docs/organization-policy/defining-locations).\n\nYou choose a location when you first create the instance. The location can't be\nchanged after the instance is created.\n\nRegional Locations\n------------------\n\nRegional locations are specific geographic locations within a multi-region\nlocation. Cloud SQL is available in all Google Cloud regions\nand is offered in upcoming regional launches at the time of launch. You can\ncreate a Cloud SQL instance in the following regions:\n\n### Multi-regional backup locations\n\nZones\n-----\n\nZones are sub-locations in a region where you can create zonal\nresources such as Cloud SQL instances. For example, a zone named\n`us-central1-a` indicates a zone within the `us-central1` region. A zone is\nindependent of other zones in the same region.\n\nYou can choose your zone to keep your Cloud SQL instance close to your other\nGoogle Cloud services. If you want your instance to be replicated between\nzones synchronously, then [configure it for high availability](/sql/docs/postgres/high-availability).\n\nYou can add a zone when you first create the instance. You can edit the instance\nat a later time to modify the zone.\n\nPreferred Location\n------------------\n\nYou can [select your zone](#zones). Choose\n**Any** if you want the system to select and assign a zone for you during\ninstance creation.\n\nFor more information about zones, see [Geography and regions](/docs/geography-and-regions).\n\nWhat's next\n-----------\n\n- Get more information about [building applications to meet your latency, availability, and durability requirements](/docs/geography-and-regions).\n- View all the [Google Cloud services available in locations worldwide](/about/locations)."]]
