Monitoring activity

Activity logs summarize all current activity and are a place for you to monitor and explore activity in the Google Cloud VMware Engine portal. Logged activities include alerts, events, tasks, and audits. Use the activity logs to determine when operations were performed, and who performed them. Activity logs exclude read operations done by a user.

View activity information

To view details about activities in your VMware Engine environment, follow these steps:

  1. Access the VMware Engine portal and select Activity.
  2. Select the tab of the activity type you're interested in. For example, you can select Tasks to view private cloud activities that are expected to take longer to complete.
  3. Click on an entry in the displayed table to open a details panel. Actions in the panel depend on the type of activity.

Alerts

Alerts are notifications of any significant activity in your private cloud. Alerts include events that affect billing or user access.

To acknowledge alerts and remove them from the list, select one or more from the list and click Acknowledge.

The following table lists the information that is available for alerts. To view the information, click Column settings and select the columns you want to view.

Column Description
Alert type Category of the alert
Time Time the alert occurred
Severity Significance of the alert
Resource name Name assigned to the resource, such as the private cloud name
Resource type Category of resource, such as private cloud or Cloud Rack
Resource ID Identifier of the resource
Description Description of what triggered the alert
Acknowledged Indication of whether the alert is acknowledge

Events

Events show user and system activity in the VMware Engine portal. The Events page lists the activity associated with a specific resource and the severity of the impact.

The following table lists the information that is available for events. To view the information, click Column settings and select the columns you want to view.

Column Description
Time Date and time the event occurred
Event type Numeric code that identifies the event
Resource name Name assigned to the resource, such as the private cloud name
Resource type Category of resource, such as private cloud
Description Description of what triggered the alert

Tasks

Tasks are private cloud activities that are expected to take at least 30 seconds to complete. Activities that are expected to take less than 30 seconds are reported only as events. For completed tasks, the information includes the total time for completion.

The following table lists the information that is available for tasks. Open the Tasks page to track the progress of tasks for your private cloud. To view specific information, click Column settings and select the columns you want to view.

Operation Action that the task performs
User User assigned to complete the task
Resource name Name assigned to the resource
Resource type Category of resource, such as private cloud
Resource ID ID of the resource
Start Start time for the task
End End time for the task
Status Current task status
Time elapsed Time that the task took to complete (if completed) or has taken so far (if in progress)
Description Task description

Audit logs

Audit logs keep track of user operations and contain the parameters that a user provides for each operation. You can use audit logs to monitor user activity for all users.

The following table lists the information that is available in audit logs. To view the information, click Column settings and select the columns you want to view.

Resource name Name assigned to the resource
Resource type Category of resource, such as private cloud
Resource ID ID of the resource
Result Result of the activity, such as Success
