In the last several years, SNI has become the accepted standard. As a result of this shift, the VIP service for App Engine, which is used to secure traffic with an SSL certificate for a custom domain, will be phased out.
Shutdown Timetable
With any deprecation, there is a follow-up decommission where the API or service is formally removed.
The following table lists the VIP service shutdown (turndown) schedule:
Decommission Date | Decommission Event |
---|---|
May 31, 2016 | New VIPs no longer available for purchase. Current customers will no longer be charged for their VIP (you will receive up to 12 months at no charge). |
September 28, 2016 | You can no longer update the mapping between your VIP(s) and your application. The setting will be locked and you will not be able to change the VIP that is serving your application. |
June, 2017 | All VIPs will be migrated to SNI. There is no charge for the SNI service and you can configure SNI in the Google Cloud Console. For customers that already use SNI, no action is required. |
