Network connectivity in Google Cloud VPC
This page describes how to set up private connectivity from Integration Connectors to your backend service such as MySQL, Postgres, and SQL Server hosted in Google Cloud VPC.
This page assumes that you are familiar with the following concepts:
Private connectivity to the Google Cloud VPC can fall into any of the following categories:
- Both the backend service and the PSC service attachment are in the same Google Cloud project or VPC.
- Both the backend service and the PSC service attachment are in different Google Cloud projects or VPC.
Considerations
When you create a PSC service attachment, consider the following key points:
- The PSC service attachment and the load balancer are created in different subnets within the same VPC. And specifically, the service attachment is always created in a NAT subnet.
- Traffic from load balancer and health check probe should be sent to the same port.
- Configure the firewall rules to facilitate the traffic flow.
Ingress rules
Traffic from the PSC service attachment's subnet should reach your backend service.
Egress rules
Egress traffic is enabled by default in a Google Cloud project, unless specific deny rules are configured.
- All your Google Cloud components such as the PSC service attachment and the load balancer should be in the same region.
Private connectivity to a backend service in a Google Cloud VPC
This section describes how to establish private connectivity when both the backend service and the PSC service attachment are within the same Google Cloud project.
The following image shows the private network connectivity setup from Integration Connectors to a service hosted in a Google Cloud VPC:
To set up private connectivity to a backend service in a Google Cloud VPC, complete the following steps:
- Create a PSC service attachment.
- Create an endpoint attachment to consume the PSC service attachment.
- Configure a connection to use the endpoint attachment.
Create a PSC service attachment
In order to establish private connectivity from Integration Connectors, your service must be exposed to Integration Connectors using a PSC service attachment. A service attachment always uses a load balancer. Therefore, if your service isn't behind a load balancer, a load balancer needs to be configured.
- Create a health check probe and allow the traffic from the probe.
- Create the health check probe.
gcloud compute health-checks create tcp HEALTH_CHECK_NAME --port BACKEND_SERVER_PORT --region=REGION
In this command, set BACKEND_SERVER_PORT to 3306 which is the default port on which the MySQL server runs.
- Create a firewall rule to allow traffic from the probe.
gcloud compute firewall-rules create VPC_NETWORK-allow-health-check --direction=INGRESS --priority=1000 --network=VPC_NETWORK --allow=tcp:BACKEND_SERVER_PORT --source-ranges=35.191.0.0/16,130.211.0.0/22
- Create the health check probe.
- Create an L4 internal load balancer and allow traffic from the load balancer.
- Create a backend service.

- Add instance group to the backend service.

- Create a forwarding rule.

- Create service attachment with explicit approval.
gcloud compute service-attachments create SERVICE_ATTACHMENT_NAME --producer-forwarding-rule=FORWARDING_RULE_NAME --connection-preference=ACCEPT_MANUAL --consumer-accept-list=SERVICE_DIRECTORY_PROJECT_ID=LIMIT --nat-subnets=psc-nat-subnet1
In this command, LIMIT is the connection limit for the project. The connection limit is the number of consumer PSC endpoints that can connect to this service. To get the SERVICE_DIRECTORY_PROJECT_ID, do the following step:

You can create the PSC service attachment such that it accepts requests only from the specified Google Cloud projects. However, to do this, you need the project ID of the service directory associated with your Google Cloud project. To get the project ID of the service directory, you can use the List Connections API as shown in the following example.

Private connectivity for different Google Cloud projects
This section describes how to establish private connectivity when the backend service and the PSC service attachment are in different Google Cloud projects or VPCs.
The following image shows the private network connectivity setup in which the PSC service attachment and the backend service are in different Google Cloud projects:
To set up private connectivity for different Google Cloud projects, complete the following steps:
- Configure private connectivity.
- Create an endpoint attachment to consume the PSC service attachment.
- Configure a connection to use the endpoint attachment.
Configure private connectivity
To configure private connectivity, do the following steps:
- Create a load balancer. If you already have a load balancer, skip this step.
- Create a zonal NEG. For more information, see Create a zonal NEG.
- Add the zonal NEG as a backend, and create the following rules:
- Create a forwarding rule.

After you allowlist the Integration Connectors project in a PSC service attachment, create an endpoint attachment to consume the PSC service attachment. For more information, see Create an endpoint attachment.
Create an endpoint attachment
Endpoint attachment as an IP addressFor instructions on how to create an endpoint attachment as an IP address, see Create an endpoint attachment as an IP address.
Endpoint attachment as a hostnameIn certain cases such as TLS enabled backends, the destination requires you to use hostnames instead of private IPs to perform TLS validation. In those cases where a private DNS is used instead of an IP address for the host destination, in addition to creating an endpoint attachment as an IP address, you must also configure managed zones. For instructions on how to create an endpoint attachment as a hostname, see Create an endpoint attachment as a hostname.
Later, when you configure your connection to use the endpoint attachment, you can select this endpoint attachment.
Configure a connection to use the endpoint attachment
Now that you have created an endpoint attachment, use the endpoint attachment in your connection. When you create a new connection or update an existing connection, in the Destinations section, select Endpoint attachment as the Destination Type and select the endpoint attachment that you created from the Endpoint Attachment list.
If you created a managed zone, select Host Address as the Destination Type and use the A-record that you created while creating the managed zone.
Troubleshooting tips
If you are having issues with private connectivity, follow the guidelines listed in this section to avoid common issues.
- To verify that the endpoint attachment is set up correctly and the PSC connection is established, check the connection status. For more information, see Verify the endpoint attachment connection.
- Ensure the following configuration for the firewall rules:
- Traffic from the PSC service attachment's subnet must be allowed to reach your backend service.
- The load balancer must be able to send traffic to your backend service.
- Pass-through load balancers (L4 TCP/UDP ILB)
Requests from the PSC service attachment's NAT IPs must be able to
reach your backend. These NAT IPs are auto-allocated from the PSC NAT
subnet range therefore, you must allow the entire NAT subnet's IP
range in which your service attachment resides. To find the PSC NAT subnet,
use the following command:
gcloud compute networks subnets list --project=PROJECT_ID --region=REGION --filter="purpose=PRIVATE_SERVICE_CONNECT"
- Proxy-based/HTTP(s) load balancers (L4 proxy ILB, L7 ILB)
Requests from a proxy load balancer originate from the proxy only subnet of the
region. Therefore, your firewall rules need to be configured to allow requests
from proxy only subnet ranges to reach your backend backend. To find the proxy
only subnet, use the following command:
gcloud compute networks subnets list --project=PROJECT_ID --region=REGION --filter="purpose=REGIONAL_MANAGED_PROXY"

- Pass-through load balancers (L4 TCP/UDP ILB)
Requests from the PSC service attachment's NAT IPs must be able to
reach your backend. These NAT IPs are auto-allocated from the PSC NAT
subnet range therefore, you must allow the entire NAT subnet's IP
range in which your service attachment resides. To find the PSC NAT subnet,
use the following command:
- The health check probe must be able to access your backend system. The Google Cloud health check probes have a fixed IP range (35.191.0.0/16, 130.211.0.0/22). So these IP addresses must be allowed to send traffic to your backend server.
- Google Cloud Connectivity test can be used to identify any gaps in your network configuration. For more information, see Create and run Connectivity Tests.
