Configuring company owned devices

This page explains how to add devices to your company's inventory. You can add devices in the Google Workspace Admin Console for full control of a device.

As an administrator, you can keep an inventory of devices your company owns to track details, such as device type and who it's assigned to. You can add devices running Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac, or Enterprise enrolled Chrome OS devices.

You can control more data of a device by personally adding it. If an employee adds their own device, you have less control.

Adding devices to your inventory

You can import the serial numbers of devices in the Google Workspace Admin Console to register these devices as company owned. If you gave devices to users before you added the device details to your Google Workspace Admin Console, you can still add them as company-owned devices.

  1. Open the Google Workspace Admin Console and log in to your admin account.

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Devices.

  3. In the navigation menu, go to Mobile & endpoints > Company owned inventory.

  4. To add a new device, click .

  5. In the Import company owned devices dialog, select the type of device you want to import and click Download import template.

    The import template downloads to your computer.

  6. Open the import template and do the following:

    1. Enter the serial number of the device. The string you enter must match the serial number of the device. If it doesn't, you can upload the device to the Google Workspace Admin Console, but you can't assign it to a user.

    2. Optional: Enter an asset tag to track the device.

    3. If you didn't include asset tags, do one of the following steps:

      • In the file header, remove ,Asset Tag.
      • Include a comma after each serial number. Each piece of data in a row should now be separated with a comma. Individual rows should be separated by a new line.
    4. Save the file.

  7. Go back to the Import company owned devices dialog and click Upload file.

  8. Select the import file that you saved and click Import.

After the import process, you receive an email that indicates the number of devices that were successfully imported.

Viewing your inventory

  1. From the Admin console Home page, go to Devices.
  2. To view your company-owned devices, in the navigation menu, go to Mobile & endpoints > Company owned inventory.

Removing a device

  1. From the Admin console Home page, go to Devices.
  2. To view your company-owned devices, in the navigation menu, go to Mobile & endpoints > Company owned inventory.
  3. Select the device and click Delete.

Serial number import issues

If there's an issue importing devices, you might see one of the following errors:

Error message Workaround
There was a problem uploading your file The file could not be uploaded. Try to upload the file again.
The file is empty The uploaded CSV file is empty. Add details for your company-owned devices and try again.
The file might be damaged or the format might be wrong The uploaded CSV file does not have a header. Check that the header format matches the import template and try again.
There's a problem in the file header The uploaded CSV file has an invalid header. Check that the header format matches the import template and try again.
There's a formatting problem in the CSV file The uploaded CSV file contains some errors. Check the format of each row and try again.
The file type must be CSV The file type must be CSV. Check the file type and try again.
The CSV file is too large The maximum file size is 10 MB. Remove some data from the CSV file and try again.
The uploaded CSV file has some unsupported columns Some columns were added to the import template. Remove the columns and try again.
The column-name column is missing from the file Add the missing column to the import template and try again.
There's more than 1 column-name column in the file Remove the duplicate column from the file and try again.

Deleting a device

This is the same as untagging a device. When you delete a mobile device, the device stops syncing corporate data, but no information is removed from it. If you want to remove corporate data from the device, wipe the account or device before you delete it.
