View Carbon Footprint data

The Carbon Footprint dashboard displays gross estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the usage of covered Google Cloud services for the selected billing account.

Before you begin

To access the Carbon Footprint dashboard, you need the following IAM permissions:

billing.accounts.getCarbonInformation
billing.accounts.list
billing.accounts.get

These IAM permissions enable you to do all of the following:

List and view the names of billing accounts
Access Carbon Footprint data associated with these billing accounts.

These IAM permissions do not allow you to access spending information because spending information requires the billing.accounts.getSpendingInformation permission.

For example, check whether you have the Carbon Footprint Viewer (roles/billing.carbonViewer) or Billing Account Viewer (roles/billing.viewer) IAM roles. Read more about Cloud Billing access control.

Accessing the Carbon Footprint dashboard

The Carbon Footprint dashboard is located in the Tools section within Google Cloud console.

Viewing your gross carbon footprint

Carbon Footprint data is computed automatically for your billing account, there is no API to enable or setup required. It can take up to 21 days for data of the previous month to become available. If you have the proper IAM permission and data is available, data is displayed on the dashboard.

Carbon footprint data is given in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent (kgCO₂e).

Summary

The dashboard displays a summary of the data to provide you with a high-level overview of the gross estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the usage of covered Google Cloud services for the selected billing account.

Yearly gross carbon footprint: The total estimated gross estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the usage of covered Google Cloud services for the selected billing account over the past 12 complete months.
Gross carbon footprint for the past month: The total estimated gross estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the usage of covered Google Cloud services for the selected billing account for the most recent completed month, compared to the previous month.

Google Cloud's net operational greenhouse gas emissions

The dashboard also includes a note indicating that Google Cloud's net operational greenhouse gas emissions, as a whole, is zero. The emissions that are neutralized include Google Cloud's scope 1, scope 2, and the scope 3 categories listed in the annual assurance of environmental indicators.

This does not represent Google Cloud's scope 2 market-based emissions per the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol; it is a separate metric used by Google as a means of measuring and reporting against its carbon-neutral commitment.

Charts

To dig deeper into the specifics of your gross carbon emissions, the dashboard includes four charts:

Gross monthly carbon emissions: Displays the total gross estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the usage of covered Google Cloud services for the selected billing account over all available months, broken down by month.
Gross carbon emissions by project: Displays the gross estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the usage of covered Google Cloud services for the selected billing account for the past complete month broken down by Google Cloud project.
Gross carbon emissions by product: Displays the gross estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the usage of covered Google Cloud services for the selected billing account for the past complete month broken down by Google Cloud service.
Gross carbon emissions by region: Displays the gross estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the usage of covered Google Cloud services for the selected billing account for the past complete month broken down by Google Cloud region.
