I just got a hamster, and he is chewing through the cardboard box I have him in. What kind of home should I get for him?

bot

Hello! It sounds like your hamster needs a more secure habitat.

For hamsters, wire or plastic cages with solid bottoms are the best choice! Make sure the spacing between the bars is narrow enough to prevent escapes.

Let me know if you have other questions about your new furry friend.

user

I bought a box of hamster food. Is that all he eats?

bot

That's a great start! While hamster food should make up the majority of your hamster's diet, it's good to give them some variety.

Small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables can be given as treats. Also, some hamsters enjoy Timothy hay, which is good for their digestion.

Remember to always research safe and appropriate foods for hamsters before giving them something new.

user

Right now, I have a little bowl of water in his box. Do I need to get one of those bottles that hang up? Is that really necessary?

bot

It's awesome that you're making sure your little buddy has access to water!

While a bowl is a good start, a water bottle is generally considered more hygienic for hamsters. Bowls can easily become soiled with bedding or droppings, and they can also spill, leaving your hamster without water.

Water bottles, especially those designed for hamsters, offer a cleaner and more stable water supply.
