Installation overview

You can install Migrate to Containers on processing clusters for the following platforms:

Before you install

Before you begin installation, you have to make several decisions that affect the installation and configuration process:

  • Where are the data repositories used to store Docker image files and migration artifacts?

  • Does your cluster require the use of an HTTPS proxy server to make outbound internet requests?

The following sections describe these considerations in more detail.

About data repositories

Migrate to Containers write information to two different data repositories as part of a migration:

  • Docker image files representing a migrated VM are written to a Docker registry.

    These Docker image files represent the files and directories of the migrating VM. This repository is not required when migrating Windows workloads.

  • Migration artifacts that represent the migrated workload are written to a data repository.

    Artifacts include the configuration YAML files that you can use to deploy the migrated workloads, as well as other files. The exact artifacts depend on whether you are migrating Linux or Windows workloads.

The default implementation and location of these repositories depends on the platform hosting the processing cluster.

About HTTPS proxy servers

Migrate to Containers supports the use of remote processing clusters to perform a migration. For example, you can create a Migrate to Containers processing cluster in a vSphere environment by using Anthos clusters on VMware, or create a processing cluster by using Anthos clusters on AWS.

In many remote environments, outbound internet access is tightly controlled through the use of an HTTP or HTTPS proxy server. By default, Migrate to Containers does not use a proxy to make outbound requests. If your environment uses a proxy server to control outbound internet access, then you can configure Migrate to Containers to use that proxy.
