Compatible OS versions

This topic shows which OS versions have been tested and verified as compatible with Managed Service for Microsoft Active Directory in a given scenario. Versions other than those listed are also expected to work, but have not been tested.

Compatible Windows versions for joining a domain

You can join an instance that is running Windows Server or Windows 10 to a Managed Microsoft AD domain. The following versions are compatible.

  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2012
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2016
  • Windows Server 2019
  • Windows 10 (version 1909 or earlier)

Compatible Linux versions for joining a domain

You can join an instance that is running Linux to a Managed Microsoft AD domain. The following versions are compatible.

  • Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.2 (Ootpa)

Compatible Windows versions for creating a trust

You can create a one-way trust between on-premises domains running Windows and a Managed Microsoft AD domain. The following versions are compatible.

  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2016
  • Windows Server 2019

Domain and Forest Functional Levels

The Domain Functional Level (DFL) and Forest Functional Level (FFL) of all new Managed AD domains is Windows Server 2012 R2. Learn more about Windows Server 2012 R2 DFL/FFL. Domains created during the Beta may have an earlier DFL.
