O GKE no Azure gerencia as instâncias de máquinas virtuais do Azure e o sistema operacional em execução nessas instâncias. Nas versões 1.26 e superiores do Kubernetes, o GKE no Azure usa imagens base do Ubuntu 22.04 LTS para nós Linux. Nas versões 1.25 e inferiores do Kubernetes, o GKE no Azure usa o Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
A VM base do Azure é mantida pela Canonical. O Google testa essas imagens como parte do processo de lançamento do GKE no Azure. Quando um cluster ou pool de nós é atualizado, as instâncias da máquina virtual subjacente são encerradas e recriadas com a versão mais recente do sistema operacional.
Quando uma instância é iniciada, o GKE no Azure executa configurações adicionais, incluindo:
Otimizando as configurações de rede para o Kubernetes
Instalando pacotes do arquivo Ubuntu (somente Ubuntu)
Desabilitando atualizações e reinicializações autônomas de pacotes apt (somente Ubuntu)
Instalando o Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Enterprise Edition e os binários do Kubernetes
