GKE on Azure 管理 Azure 虚拟机实例和这些实例上运行的操作系统。在 Kubernetes 1.26 版及更高版本中，GKE on Azure 使用适用于 Linux 节点的 Ubuntu 22.04 LTS 基础映像。在 Kubernetes 1.25 版及更低版本中，GKE on Azure 使用 Ubuntu 20.04 LTS。
基本 Azure 虚拟机由 Canonical 维护。Google 会在 GKE on Azure 发布过程中测试这些映像。当集群或节点池升级后，底层虚拟机实例会终止并使用最新操作系统版本重新创建。
实例启动时，GKE on Azure 会执行其他配置，包括：
- 优化 Kubernetes 的网络设置
- 从 Ubuntu 归档文件中安装软件包（仅限 Ubuntu）
- 停用无人参与的 apt 软件包升级和重新启动（仅限 Ubuntu）
- 安装 Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Enterprise 版本和 Kubernetes 二进制文件
