GKE on Azure 會管理 Azure 虛擬機器執行個體，以及在這些執行個體上執行的作業系統。在 Kubernetes 1.26 以上版本中，GKE on Azure 會使用 Ubuntu 22.04 LTS 基本映像檔做為 Linux 節點。在 Kubernetes 1.25 以下版本中，Azure 上的 GKE 使用 Ubuntu 20.04 LTS。
基礎 Azure VM 由 Canonical 維護。Google 會在 GKE on Azure 發布程序中測試這些映像檔。升級叢集或節點集區時，系統會終止基礎虛擬機器執行個體，並以最新 OS 版本重新建立。
執行個體啟動時，Azure 上的 GKE 會執行額外設定，包括：
- 最佳化 Kubernetes 的網路設定
- 從 Ubuntu 封存檔安裝套件 (僅限 Ubuntu)
- 停用無人值守的 apt 套件升級和重新啟動 (僅限 Ubuntu)
- 安裝 Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Enterprise 版和 Kubernetes 二進位檔

In Kubernetes versions 1.26 and\nhigher, GKE on Azure uses Ubuntu 22.04 LTS base images for Linux\nnodes. In Kubernetes versions 1.25 and lower, GKE on Azure uses\nUbuntu 20.04 LTS.\n\nThe base Azure VM is maintained by Canonical. Google tests these images as part\nof the GKE on Azure release process.
