Cloud Composer version list

This page describes the released versions of Cloud Composer images.

About Cloud Composer images

Cloud Composer builds Docker images that bundle Airflow releases with other common binaries and Python libraries. These Docker images are versioned with each Cloud Composer service release.

When you create an environment, you specify an image version to use. Once an environment is created, it keeps using the specified image version until you upgrade it to a later version.

Latest Cloud Composer version

When creating a new environment or upgrading an existing one from the Google Cloud console, only the latest supported versions of Cloud Composer images are available.

You can upgrade your environment from any version of Cloud Composer only to the latest version, three previous versions of Cloud Composer, and to versions with an extended upgrade timeline by using Google Cloud CLI, API, or Terraform.

Default Cloud Composer version

Each Cloud Composer version supports more than one Airflow version. If you do not specify an image version when you create an environment, the default version is used.

Cloud Composer uses the latest Cloud Composer 2 image as the default version.

Cloud Composer versions with an extended upgrade timeline

You can upgrade your environment to a version with an extended upgrade timeline until this version reaches its security notifications end date.

Maintenance release versions of Cloud Composer 1

Maintenance release versions of Cloud Composer 1 are new Cloud Composer 1 images that provide only bug fixes and small improvements.

Support dates for maintenance release versions correspond to the support dates of the last Cloud Composer 1 version 1.20.12 that was released on April 25, 2023.

Versions with disabled upgrades

For some versions of Cloud Composer images, it is not possible to upgrade an environment to a later version:

  • composer-1.7.7-airflow-1.10.2
  • composer-1.7.7-airflow-1.10.1
  • composer-1.7.7-airflow-1.9.0

If you use a version with disabled upgrades, we recommend to create a new environment side-by-side, then migrate all your DAGs to the new environment. Once you confirm that the new environment works, delete the environment with disabled upgrades if you don't need it anymore.

Version support dates

Each Cloud Composer image has a release date and two support dates associated with it. The support dates are based on Cloud Composer version deprecation and support periods.
