Handling message failures

This page explains how to handle message failures by setting a subscription retry policy or forwarding undelivered messages to a dead-letter topic (also know as a dead-letter queue).

Subscription retry policy

If the Pub/Sub attempts to deliver a message but the subscriber can't acknowledge it, Pub/Sub will retry sending the message. By default, Pub/Sub will try resending the message immediately. However, the conditions that prevented message acknowledgement may not have had time to change when using immediate redelivery, resulting in the message being unacknowledged again, and the message being continuously redelivered. To address this issue, Pub/Sub lets you configure an exponential backoff policy for better flow control.

The idea behind exponential backoff is to add progressively longer delays between retry attempts. After the first delivery failure, Pub/Sub will wait for a minimum backoff time before retrying. For each consecutive failure on that message, more time will be added to the delay, up to a maximum delay. The maximum and minimum delay intervals are not fixed, and should be configured based on local factors to your application.

Configuring exponential backoff

Console

When creating a new subscription, you can configure an exponential backoff retry policy using the following steps:

  1. In the Cloud Console, go to the Pub/Sub subscriptions page.

    Go to the subscriptions page

  2. Click Create subscription.

  3. Enter the Subscription ID.

  4. Choose or create a topic from the drop-down menu. The subscription receives messages from the topic.

  5. Under Retry policy, select or Retry after exponential backoff.

  6. Enter a Minimum backoff and Maxiumum backoff between 0 and 600 seconds. The default values are 10 seconds for minimum backoff, and 600 seconds for maximum backoff.

  7. Click Create.

gcloud

To create a new subscription with an exponential backoff retry policy, run the gcloud pubsub create command with the flags shown below:

Forwarding to dead-letter topics

If the Pub/Sub service attempts to deliver a message but the subscriber can't acknowledge it, Pub/Sub can forward the undeliverable message to a dead-letter topic. You can set the maximum number of delivery attempts.

To forward undeliverable messages, complete the following steps:

  1. Create a topic.
  2. Create or update a subscription and set the dead-letter topic.
  3. Permit Pub/Sub to forward undeliverable messages to the dead-letter topic and remove forwarded undeliverable messages from the subscription.

A dead-letter topic is a subscription property, not a topic property. When you create a topic, you can't specify that the topic is a dead-letter topic. You create or update a subscription and set the dead-letter topic.

Setting a dead-letter topic

When you create or update a subscription, you can set a subscription property for the dead-letter topic. For best results, set the dead-letter topic to a different topic from the topic that the subscription is attached to.

If you set a dead-letter topic, you can also set the following subscription properties:

  • Maximum number of delivery attempts: The default is 5 delivery attempts and you can specify between 5-100 delivery attempts.

  • Project with the dead-letter topic: If the dead-letter topic is in a different project from the subscription, you must specify the project with the dead-letter topic.

You can create a subscription and set a dead-letter topic using the Cloud Console, the gcloud command-line tool, or the Pub/Sub API.

Console

To create a subscription and set a dead-letter topic, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Cloud Console, go to the Subscriptions page.

    Go to the Subscriptions page

  2. Click Create subscription.

  3. Enter the Subscription ID.

  4. Choose or create a topic from the drop-down menu. The subscription receives messages from the topic.

  5. In the Dead lettering section, select Enable dead lettering.

  6. Choose or create a topic from the drop-down menu.

  7. Optional: In the Maximum delivery attempts field, specify an integer between 5 and 100.

  8. Click Create.

To create a subscription and set a dead-letter topic, use the gcloud pubsub subscriptions create command:

To forward undeliverable messages to a dead-letter topic, Pub/Sub must have permission to do the following:

Pub/Sub creates and maintains a service account for each project: service-project-number@gcp-sa-pubsub.iam.gserviceaccount.com. You can grant forwarding permissions by assigning publisher and subscriber roles to this service account.

Tracking delivery attempts

After you set the dead-letter topic property of a subscription, every message you receive from the subscription has a field that tallies the number of delivery attempts to subscribers.

When Pub/Sub forwards undeliverable messages from a pull subscription, every message you receive from the subscription includes the delivery_attempt field.

When Pub/Sub forwards undeliverable messages from a push subscription, every message you receive from the subscription includes the deliveryAttempt field.

Managing forwarded messages

After forwarding an undeliverable message, the Pub/Sub service removes the message from the subscription. You can monitor forwarded messages with Cloud Monitoring.

If you attach a subscription to the dead-letter topic, the messages use the expiration policy of the attached subscription rather than the expiration period of the subscription with the dead-letter topic property.

Monitoring forwarded messages

The subscription/dead_letter_message_count metric records the number of undeliverable messages that Pub/Sub forwards from a subscription.

Removing a dead-letter topic

To stop forwarding undeliverable messages, remove the dead-letter topic from the subscription.

You can remove a dead-letter topic from a subscription using the Cloud Console, the gcloud command-line tool, or the Pub/Sub API.

Console

To remove a dead-letter topic from a subscription, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Cloud Console, go to the Subscriptions page.

    Go to the Subscriptions page

  2. In the list of subscriptions, click next to the subscription to update.

  3. From the context menu, select Edit.

    The context menu with the Edit option highlighted.

  4. In the Dead lettering section, clear Enable dead lettering.

  5. Click Update.

Pricing

When the Pub/Sub service forwards undeliverable messages, the following fees apply:

  • Publish fees billed to the billing account associated with the project that contains the dead-letter topic.
  • Subscription egress fees billed to the billing account associated with the project containing the subscription with the dead-letter topic property.

If you set the dead-letter topic property of a subscription but the message storage location policy of the dead-letter topic topic doesn't allow the region that contains the subscription, publish egress fees also apply.
