As we wrote earlier this week, we’ve been growing by leaps and bounds, and as a result we’ve launched the Google Cloud blog as a one-stop destination for all things related to the cloud. But at the same time, we don’t want our readers to miss out on the best of The Keyword, Google’s central news source. To help, we’re kicking off a monthly series highlighting stories from The Keyword we think will be interesting and useful to Cloud readers. Without further ado, let’s dive into our suggested reading list in August.

In 2016 we developed an AI-powered recommendation system to improve the energy efficiency of our data centers. Last month we shared that our AI system is now cooling our data centers autonomously. We’ve also begun work on our third data center in Singapore to meet the needs of the growing number of users and businesses in Southeast Asia.

What to read if you want to know more about the positive social impact of AI.

Using machine learning for predictive analytics has benefits far beyond enterprise use cases. A Harvard researcher teamed up with Google ML experts to publish a paper on forecasting earthquake aftershock locations with AI-assisted science. And a California high school student developed a device that could identify and predict areas in a forest that are susceptible to wildfires, providing an early warning to fire departments.

What to read if you like pie. (As in, Android 9 Pie.)

Curious to know what Android 9 Pie has in store for enterprise users? Learn about its AI-powered productivity tools, security enhancements, and more.

What to read if you want a blast from the past.

Google leaders shared their memories of their first summer jobs in August. Our favorite anecdote? Cloud AI’s Jeff Dean got his start in a renaissance string quartet.

That’s it for this month. We’ll be back at the end of September with more monthly highlights from The Keyword.
