Dr. Andrew Moore, Dean of the School of Computer Science at CMU, will be joining Google Cloud to head up Google Cloud AI at the end of 2018 and advising in the meantime. Dr. Fei-Fei Li will be returning to her professorship at Stanford, as originally planned, and she will transition to being an AI/ML Advisor for Google Cloud.

Over the past five years, we have seen remarkable ways in which AI can impact the world. Google’s Cloud AI group aims to democratize AI by making it easy, fast, and useful. We believe that if we can get every developer in the world using AI in great ways, we can spur innovation that will benefit everyone. Building on Google’s expertise in AI, we have introduced a series of products over the last three years that has helped make this mission a reality. We have brought the best of Google’s AI in vision, language, speech, and conversation to companies everywhere through cloud services, and have built a platform for customers to scale their own models on Google Cloud through GPUs and TPUs. This year, we advanced AI even further through Cloud AutoML, and this makes it possible for developers with little knowledge of machine learning to build advanced models for their own business problems. We also bring over 2 million data scientists together through Kaggle, the largest community of data scientists in the world.

We have over 15,000 paid customers on our platform, and we have seen ten thousand more start using our AutoML products since we released them at Google Next in July 2018. Moreover, as AI is used more and more widely, we aim to ensure that AI is used in a responsible way by adhering to our AI Principles.  We believe that we are just at the beginning of this journey, and we are looking forward to the benefit we can bring to all of society in the years to come. Google Cloud is leading the way in helping organizations apply AI, and we are excited that Andrew will be joining us to continue building our technology and bringing it to customers.

Dr. Fei-Fei Li took a leave from Stanford and joined Google almost 2 years ago as Google Cloud AI’s leader and Chief Scientist. She has built a tremendous team and together they have innovated and done a remarkable job of accelerating the adoption of AI and ML by developers and Google Cloud customers. “What I have learned by working in the industry will strengthen further collaborations between academia and industry going forward.” says Dr. Fei-Fei Li. “And I look forward to working closely with Andrew and the Google Cloud AI teams to continue this collaboration.” We are proud that Fei-Fei will be returning to Stanford to continue her leadership in the field of AI in the academic environment, and we're thrilled that we will still be able to continue to work with her as an Advisor.

Andrew will leave his role as Dean of Computer Science at CMU at the end of 2018 to join Google full-time, based in Pittsburgh. This is a return for Dr. Moore who previously worked at Google between 2006 and 2014. ”I am bursting with excitement about this,” says Dr. Moore. “I have always deeply believed in the power of technology to improve the state of the world, so for me it's a big opportunity to help Google bring useful AI to all the other industry verticals."

"On behalf of the Carnegie Mellon University community, I am excited to convey our support for Andrew Moore as he takes this next step in his career,” said Farnam Jahanian, President of Carnegie Mellon University. “In addition to advancing CMU's vision for the transformative potential of AI, Andrew is exemplifying the Carnegie Mellon ideal of taking ideas developed at the university and applying them to real-world environments. Pursuing a shared understanding of the vital role of AI in the 21st century will also continue to strengthen our long-standing partnership with Google.”

We are incredibly fortunate to have Andrew’s leadership at this point in our development as we define how we will expand bringing AI and ML technologies and solutions to developers and organizations all over the world.
