Migrating from v2 to v3beta1

Will v2 be deprecated?
v2 will continue to be supported. Going forward, new features and improvements will be completed on v3, and v2 features will remain as is.
Will v3 support backwards compatibility with v2?
Cloud Translation API v3 supports all v2  Cloud Translation API  features and models, but due to required changes to the client libraries it will not support client integration backwards compatibility. Existing customers need to plan their migrations in order to benefit from Translation API v3 features. In the Migrating to v3 guide we provide guidance on key considerations for eveloping a migration plan.
I have a GCP contract with special pricing for Cloud Translation API v2, will I get the same pricing on v3?
At Beta launch, any existing deal pricing you had on v2 will be honored on v3 for the duration of your existing contract. At BETA launch this will not be automatic. You'll need to have your FSA/CE place a request to migrate your v3 SKU to honor your v2 price. We are working to automate this process in the coming months.
Will quota be shared between v2 and v3?
Yes, quota is per project, and is shared across Cloud Translation API versions and models. For details, see Quotas and Limits
Will v2 have a Free Tier for NMT Translation requests?
No. To take advantage of the Free Tier you will need to migrate to v3. See the Pricing page for more details.

Access to the Cloud Translation API

How do I sign up?
See the Quickstart for how to sign up for the Cloud Translation API service.
How do I create a corporate account and not use my personal gmail account?
You can sign up for a Google Account using your work email address. Then use the account you just created when you login to the Google Cloud Platform Console.
Is there any free quota?
Yes, but to take advantage of the Free Tier you will need to use v3.
What languages are supported?
See the list of supported languages.
Can I resell the Cloud Translation API?
No, you are not permitted to resell the Cloud Translation API service.
Can my users sign up for their own Translation API key and use it in my application?
Yes. However, one requirement is that you identify the application by providing a unique user agent and/or referrer when making requests to the Cloud Translation API with your user's key.

Data confidentiality

Does Google look at or use the text I send for translation?
Google will not use any of your content for any purpose except to provide you with the service. See the Data Usage FAQ for more information.

Attribution

Do I have to attribute Google when publishing the results of translation?
Usually, yes. See the attribution guidelines for more information.
If I'm post-editing the translation results, do I need to display attribution?
No. If you are post-editing the machine translation, no attribution is required.

Technical Questions

How do I tell Cloud Translation API to NOT translate something?

You can use the following HTML tags:

  • <span translate="no"> </span>
  • <span class="notranslate"> </span>

This functionality requires the source text to be submitted in HTML.

Why was a style attribute added to the translated text with text-align and direction CSS properties?

This occurs when you include HTML with the requested text to be translated, and you are translating from a right-to-left to a left-to-right language, or from a left-to-right to a right-to-left language. The translation includes the HTML style attribute with the text-align and direction CSS properties to ensure that the translated text is oriented in the proper direction. For example, translating <h2>Sample text</h2> from English to Hebrew returns the following JSON:

I get an HTTP 403 error when I call the API.
You may be exceeding your quota: either the daily billable total, or the limit on characters per 100 seconds. The error message says Daily Limit Exceeded if you exceeded the daily limit or User Rate Limit Exceeded if you exceeded either of the "Characters per 100 seconds" quotas.

To view or change usage limits for your project, or to request an increase to your quota, do the following:

  1. If you don't already have a billing account for your project, then create one.
  2. Visit the Enabled APIs page of the API library in the GCP Console, and select an API from the list.
  3. To view and change quota-related settings, select Quotas. To view usage statistics, select Usage.
I sometimes get HTTP 500 (Internal Errors) response from the API
This could happen if you submit text without the source language specified. If Google cannot determine the source language given the text (usually because the text is too short), we will return a 500. This situation can be fixed by specifying the source language explicitly.
Can I specify multiple target languages in one request?
You can supply up to ten target languages in a batch request. If you're not making a batch request, you can only specify a single target language with your request.
Is it possible to get multiple translations of a word?
No. This feature is only available via the web interface at translate.google.com
