Shutting down the appliance

You can shut the appliance down if planned power or facility work will affect the appliance. To ensure that your data is safe during the work you can either power the appliance down, or halt the system.

The following describes the options for shutting the appliance down:

  • Power down: The appliance powers off. To start the appliance after power is restored, you must press the power button on the appliance.

  • Halt: The appliance unmounts the drives, stops the operating system, and idles the CPU. The appliance stays powered on. The appliance can be safely powered off when halted, and it automatically boots when power is restored.

Do the following to shut the appliance down:

Power down

  1. Connect to the appliance:

    Windows

    1. Open Putty.
    2. For Connection type, select SSH.
    3. In the Host Name field, enter:

      USERNAME@169.254.20.1
                  

      Replacing USERNAME with the username provided by Transfer Appliance Team.

    4. Click Connect.
    5. Enter the Transfer Appliance password when prompted.

    Linux

    1. Run the following command:

      ssh USERNAME@169.254.20.1
                  

      Replacing USERNAME with the username provided by Transfer Appliance Team.

    2. Enter the Transfer Appliance password when prompted.

    Mac

    1. Run the following command:

      ssh USERNAME@169.254.20.1
                  

      Replacing USERNAME with the username provided by Transfer Appliance Team.

    2. Enter the Transfer Appliance password when prompted.
  2. Run the following command to power down the appliance:

    sudo shutdown now

Halt

  1. Connect to the appliance:

    Windows

    1. Open Putty.
    2. For Connection type, select SSH.
    3. In the Host Name field, enter:

      USERNAME@169.254.20.1

    4. Click Connect.
    5. Enter the Transfer Appliance password when prompted.

    Linux

    1. Run the following command:

      ssh USERNAME@169.254.20.1
                  

      Replacing USERNAME with the username provided by Transfer Appliance Team.

    2. Enter the Transfer Appliance password when prompted.

    Mac

    1. Run the following command:

      ssh USERNAME@169.254.20.1
                  

      Replacing USERNAME with the username provided by Transfer Appliance Team.

    2. Enter the Transfer Appliance password when prompted.
  2. Run the following command to halt the appliance:

    sudo shutdown -H now
